Canon 32mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Filling in as the premium normal-length lens, the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM from Canon is a 51.2mm-equivalent prime characterized by its impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture. This fast design affords increased control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques, and also suits shooting in difficult lighting conditions. One aspherical element is used in the optical design, and helps to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. A Super Spectra Coating has also been applied to control flare and ghosting for greater contrast when shooting in bright or backlit conditions. Additionally, an STM motor is featured and provides quick, smooth, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Normal-length prime is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-M-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 51.2mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture excels in low-light conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter using selective focus.
One aspherical element reduces distortion and spherical aberration for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to minimize lens flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Gear-type STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Canon 32mm f/1.4 reviews

    EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best EF-M Lens yet. I have owned every lens made for the M series and an M3 and now an M5. What has been lacking until now was a good fast "normal" prime lens. Yes, there is a 22mm f2, but no "normal" lens. Now Canon has fixed that and fixed it very well. What is a "normal" lens? I'm not going to launch into a long exposition on the subject. There's plenty of material on the internet if you do a search. Suffice it to say that a "normal" lens is generally 50mm on a full frame camera and in this case 32mm with a 1.6 crop factor. A normal lens is sometimes said to have the field of view of the human eye. Not exactly, but it does give a natural perspective, sharpness and control over depth of field. A wider lens will tend to flatten perspective and a longer lens will compress perspective. Thus, the image from a normal lens will have a perspective similar to human vision. Prime lenses will also be faster than zoom lenses. This gives them better low light performance. It also allows for good control over depth of field. For portrait work this will allow the subject to be sharp while blurring the background. The effect will be to make the subject stand out from the background. This lens does an excellent job of creating bokeh. It also allows for sharp backgrounds at smaller apertures. Images made with this lens are sharper than those of any other EF-M lens. The 22mm prime is also excellent, but I prefer the 32mm. The lens is very fast and at f1.4 you will need a neutral density filter in bright daylight. This lens in the M series also introduces an AF+MF focus mode. You press the shutter down half way to focus as usual, but then while still pressing the shutter you can then manually adjust the focus. This is very useful at large apertures where the depth of field in very thin. You can place the plane of focus exactly where you want it and not where the autofocus points say it should be. Why is a prime normal lens so important? It will help you be a better photographer. You frame shots based on your relationship to the subject not by zooming in or out. If you want it bigger, get closer. If you want it wider, move back. You learn to know the coverage of your lens. If you buy this lens, try leaving all your other lenses at home and enjoy using only a normal lens. I also own an EOS 5D MkIV with the Canon 50mm f1.2 normal lens as well as several other EF lenses. This lens gives the M series a much needed addition. For serious photography it is a must have (or even if you're not serious). Attached is an image taken in my front yard and minimally processed in Lightroom and Silver Efx Pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty close to L This is not a Zeiss on a 5DSR but the sharpness and rendition gives it a definite L series quality.  Probably not weather sealed but neither is the M6.   Metal mount like the 18-55mm with a solid construction feel. For less than $500, this lens is a bargain for the build and results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally a great prime for the M system! For my professional work I use a batch of 5D bodies and a slew of L lenses plus some Sigma f/1.4 Art glass and the 12-24 mm f/4 Art.  This is probably as much quality as you can get out of a full frame outfit.  But it is large and heavy. For a lot of my personal shooting I have been using Digital Rebels, lately the SL1 and the SL2 with the three excellent kit zooms and a plastic fantastic.  With a couple of small Godox V350s I can travel light yet be able to tackle most photographic challenges life can throw at me. Yet, with increasing age I must admit that a small mirrorless outfit seems attractive.  I was tempted by the Sony APS-C system but not by having to acquire a whole new incompatible ecosystem.  The Canon M looked promising, but real photographers dont shoot using a screen like the phone snappers! When the M5 came out with an EVF I was sold.  I bought one (again with the the three kit zooms plus the 22mm f/2.)  In my little kit I also have the nifty fifty for portraits.  I have occasionally included a Sigma 30mm f/1,4 non Art, but it is neither small nor light.  So the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 seemed like an answered prayer. I bought one and I am mighty impressed; the lens is sharp, contrasty, and seemingly without vignetting (14 elements probably help!)  It is the perfect low light walk-around lens.  And it seems to indicate that Canon is getting serious about the M system.  I really love my M outfit, it is small and lightweight yet has great capabilities. And where would I like to see the system develop?  I would welcome a few more small primes fitting the form factor; a 15mm f/2 or 2.8, a portrait 53 mm f/1.4, and an 85 f/2 (if feasible within the size parameters, if not, then f/2.4.)  I could honestly do close to 80% of my professional work with such an outfit, provided I wouldnt be laughed off the job! The two attached photos are both shot wide open at f/1.4.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent EF-M prime lens This EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens does exactly what it was intended to do.  It is excellent!   I have only owned this lens for a short period of time.  So far I prefer it to either my EF-M 22mm f/2 STM prime lens or my EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM zoom lens which are also very good lenses.   For those of you who also own a full frame DSLR, dont confuse the equivalence of this APS-C lens to your 50mm lens on your full frame DSLR.  This EF-M lens would not be equivalent to an f/1.4 lens.  Instead, it would be more like an f/2.2 lens on a full frame DSLR.  Yes, this EF-M 32mm f/1.4 STM lens is approximately equivalent to the focal length of a full frame 50 mm lens.  However, you also need to take into account the effect of the crop factor on the aperture for determining equivalence.  The f-stop rating on an equivalent full frame lens would actually be 1.6 X 1.4 which rounds to a f/2.2 lens.  That is a 4 stop difference on the one-third f-stop increment scale when comparing this APS-C lens to a full frame lens.   Enjoy using your this EF-M lens on your EOS-M mirrorless system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addendum to my previous review. Another reviewer has stated that this f1.4 lens is actually an f2.2 with the 1.6 crop factor.  This is incorrect.  The 35mm equivalent focal length is affected by the crop factor, but the f stops are not.
