Celestron 80 Overview

The Celestron Travel Scope 80mm f/5 AZ Refractor Telescope Kit is designed for portability and ease-of-use for both astronomical and terrestrial use. Its refractor-style optical tube has a respectable aperture that gathers the amount of light required to ensure views of the moon and planets remain bright and clear. Included with this model of the Travel Scope is a universal smartphone digiscoping adapter that lets you capture photos and videos through the eyepieces for easy editing, enjoyment, and sharing.

A photo-style alt-az pan/tilt head easily mounts the OTA with a simple screw and has a single control handle that allows for smooth movement and locks the altitude in place for hands-free use to minimize vibration. Supporting it all is a photo-style tripod that collapses low enough for tabletop use and extends to full-sized height. The included erecting prism corrects views horizontally and laterally so the Travel Scope can be used as a conventional spotting scope, and it comes with two eyepieces offering 20x and 40x magnifications, although any 1.25" astronomical eyepiece may be used. Everything fits in the included backpack to make it as portable possible.

Optical Tube
  • 80mm aperture is ideal for lunar and planetary viewing as well as terrestrial use
  • Fast f/5 focal ratio ensures views remain bright
  • Short 400mm focal length produces lower magnifications for wider fields of view to complement the manual mount
  • Refractor-style light path produces sharp and clear views with limited aberration
  • Antireflection fully coated optics improves light transmission, color rendition, sharpness, and contrast
  • 1.25" rack-and-pinion focuser
  • Integrated dew shield prevents condensation at night, and minimizes glare during the day

Celestron 80 Reviews

Not finding this telescope very useful

I need to be careful writing this review, because perhaps I didn't assemble the telescope properly. The telescope has some nice qualities to recommend it: it is lightweight, easy to assemble and disassemble, and can be easily packed away in a backpack that comes with the telescope, so that it ought to be ideal for taking on trips. Since I live in New York City where there is not much to see astronomically, that is very important. However, the telescope mounting doesn't seem to be sturdy at all. The telescope wobbles, which makes observation very difficult. But what is worse is that it is impossible to point the scope exactly at a target -- I can't get the scope to move in exact increments, it jerks arounds and doesn't stay where I point it. I found the instructions to be rather sparse. To put the telescope together, I had to do work hard to figure out what the instructions meant. It could be that if I work with it more and consult the Celestron company, I'll find a solution, perhaps something I did wrong. But as things stand, I bought a useless telescope, at least for astronomical purposes.

Good Telescope

This is a good telescope! 1.OTA: The Optical Tube Assembly is relatively fast @ f/5. It is clear and bright. 2. Tripod: The tripod is somewhat wobbly, especially if you extend the center column. Use a good tripod. I chose to use my Manfrotto tripod with a Manfrotto fluid head. Luckily the telescope has 1/4 X 20 mounting holes (common photo size), so mounting it on a good tripod will not be a problem. 3. Finderscope: The finderscope is okay, but it mounts with somewhat flexible plastic mount. I chose to replace it with a Celestron Star Finder Finderscope, which is very easy to use and comes with a sturdy mount that fits nicely on the telescope. Happy stargazing!

Asked by: Charles
Yes, a camera T-Ring can be mounted straight to the Celestron Travel Scope 80mm f/5 AZ Refractor Telescope Kit. Remove the diagonal and eyepiece and you will see the threading to attach the T-Ring.

What solar filter would go with this scope? I'd prefer a white light film instead of orange film.
Asked by: John
The MrStarGuy Adjustable Objective White Light Solar Filter (86-117mm OD) would be the best option for the Celestron Travel Scope 80mm f/5 AZ Refractor Telescope. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/3JtByDC

How do you set up the smartphone adapter

How do you set up the smartphone adapter
Asked by: Ethan
The smartphone adapter allows you to connect any smartphone to your telescope's eyepiece. The adapter is installed by clamping over the top of an eyepiece and held in position with the help of tightening knobs that securely locks your phone in place. Some large and/or bulky phone cases (including folio style cases) may need to be removed for the phone to fit in the adapter. Sincerely, Garrett at Celestron
