Sony Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter for Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens
Key Features
  • Drop-In Circular Polarizer Filter
  • Fits Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
  • Reduces Haze in Landscapes
This Sony Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. It is made specifically to fit within the accessory filter slot of the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens, whose front diameter is too large to accommodate a screw-on filter. With that lens, the effect of this filter occurs behind the main glass elements instead of in front of them.

Sony VFDCPL1 Overview

This Sony Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. It is made specifically to fit within the accessory filter slot of the Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens, whose front diameter is too large to accommodate a screw-on filter. With that lens, the effect of this filter occurs behind the main glass elements instead of in front of them.

The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and includes an integrated locking mechanism to secure it within the compatible lens, as well as an external dial to allow rotation of the filter glass for control of the polarization effect.

Compatible with Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens
Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface
Polarizing filters arrange and filter directionally polarized light perpendicular to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features
Constructed from optical glass for clarity
Plastic filter case for storage and transport

Sony VFDCPL1 Reviews

Haven't used it much yet

I wish it fit more snugly - it seems like the seal with the lens housing could be tighter. I worry about the possibility of dust getting inside the lens barrel which would be expensive or impossible to clean. Also not sure how water resistant it is. I would be curious about others' experiences, but not surprisingly, there are not many reviews for this item.

Words don't do this lens enough justice. But "Best Lens Ever" is pretty close. It does everything as advertised and takes excellent photos. I am very happy with my purchase.

How many stops of light do we lose by using this polarizer?
Asked by: SAM
Like all circular polarizing filters, the loss of light varies with the angle the polarizer is applied against the angle of the light source. I do not know what the maximum light loss would be but see the other answer for a guide to this. The minimum light loss should be close to zero.

There is no variable nd filter that works the same way for this lens ?
Asked by: ar
A polarizing filter must be turned and this expensive support does that. A ND filter does not need to be turned. Therefore the clear filter that comes already in the lens can be replaced by any 40.5mm filter into the non-turning drop-in frame that comes in the lens. Just purchase a 40.5mm ND filter, screw out the clear filter and screw in the ND filter then drop the frame back into the lens. Standard 40.5mm diameter screw thread.

This filter fits all the FE super telephoto lenses. The older A-mount lenses used a larger diameter filter so are not compatible.

Re: 600mm f4, What if I don't want to use polarizer, can glass be removed and insert holder only?
Asked by: George
No. The Sony Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter for Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS Lens has a non-removable glass element. The filter tray included with the Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS Lens is compatible with 40.5mm filters and can be left empty, but is not compatible with circular polarizers due to it lacking the external dial.

It comes in a round, plastic case that just fits into the provided slot in the packing of the case of the FE 400 F28 lens. It works and is unique but it is grossly overpriced.
