Samsung HMD Odyssey Overview

  • 1Description

Designed for Windows Mixed Reality, the Samsung HMD Odyssey+ Windows Mixed Reality Headset provides an immersive virtual reality experience.

The Odyssey+ improves on its predecessor with Samsung's Anti-Screen Door Effect technology. The Screen Door Effect (SDE) is a widely known issue for VR headsets, but Samsung solves it by applying a grid that diffuses light coming from each pixel and replicating the picture to areas around the pixel. This makes the spaces between pixels less visible. This provides a perceived 1233 ppi, which is doubled that of its predecessor's 616 ppi.

There are also built-in headphones that were tuned by AKG and provide 360° spatial audio. The rich, dynamic surround sound delivers audio naturally. There is also a built-in microphone array for when you want to chat with friends and teammates as well as take full advantage of Cortana, the digital assistant for Windows.

The Odyssey+ has dual 3.5" AMOLED displays, each with a 1440 x 1600 resolution, for a total of 2880 x 1600. It has a field of view of 110°. Its built-in Y-cable has USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A and HDMI 2.0 connectors that you use to connect to your computer. Two controllers are included with the Odyssey+ headset—you will need to use Bluetooth to connect them. Please note that the Windows Fall Creators Update is required.

Get access to thousands of games and VR experiences through the SteamVR app or the Microsoft Store.

Samsung Anti-Screen Door Effect Technology
With Samsung's anti-SDE (Screen Door Effect) technology, the Odyssey+ effectively delivers over twice the pixel count of the display resolution. The anti-SDE technology diffuses light coming out of the pixels and replicates the picture to areas around the pixels. This makes the space between the pixels less visible and allows for a clear, immersive VR experience.
AKG 360° Spatial Sound
Thanks to the built-in AKG-tuned headphones, you'll experience rich and dynamic 360° surround sound. The built-in microphone array lets you chat with teammates or control your computer with Cortana, the digital Windows assistant.
Wider Nose Guard and Eye Box
The Odyssey+ features a wider nose guard at 1.5" and a wider eye box at 5.7" for a more comfortable fit. It also features premium cooling fabric to reduce overheating and fogging up of the lenses.
Ready. Set. Play.
Your Odyssey+ can be set up in minutes. Just plug in the USB 3.1 Gen 1 and HDMI 2.0 connectors and launch the Mixed Reality Portal app in Windows.

    Samsung HMD Odyssey Reviews

HMD Odyssey+ Windows Mixed Reality Headset is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A truly premium VR headset, and the best WMR unit After a month of usage, the Odessey+ has revolutionized sim racing for me. It performs flawlessly. The optics and displays are amazing--in fact, they are some of the best available! Comfort and fitment could be improved. The fitment issues can create problems with the earphone placement as well. In fact, I hope the next generation will allow the earphones to be removed. While the sound is pretty good, I would like to be able to use external speakers or my own higher fidelity headphones. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the Odessey+ and think it offers the best visuals and the best value of any VR headset.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible VR at a value Friend lent me his Odyssey+ while he was on vacation. I was so impressed that I just picked one up for myself. I was really hesitant with Windows MR as a whole, and while their storefront is kind of lacking thus far, the extensibility of SteamVR and Revive have made it more than worth it. I don't have a ton of room in my computer room, so I find the inside-out tracking an absolute god send. The fidelity is amazing, and I am sold on this device, platform, and VR as a whole. Kudos to MS, and especially to Samsung... This is a great device.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great display but poor tracking and comfort The Samsung Odyssey + is a fantastic headset due to the screen quality and no screen door effect. Unfortunately, the head tracking is still not great nor is it very comfortable. Lots of light comes through the areas in front of your nose and above your forehead. The USB and display cord coming from the headset is too short and makes room scale rather challenging. Comparing this to the HTC Vive, the software is also lacking. I have experienced some issues with the headset automatically turning on and launching the Windows Mixed Reality home screen even when not in use. For $299.99.... You simply can't beat this headset though. Great job Samsung. Just make it more comfortable and work on the tracking a bit more. :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still not perfect, but a minor upgrade from 1st The headset is not ergonomically balanced and does cause some discomfort on the bridge of my nose when I wear it. In addition, light will bleed into the nose guard, so this will be set back from the 1st gen. The cable length is still the same as the original & it will need to be extended if you want to expand your virtual floor zone for game play. The display itself is remarkable and the I cannot identify the SDR unless my head is still and I'm truly looking for it. Typically it can be discovered on white or light color background objects. You'll notice blurred blending between pixels on the outer edges due to Samsung's anti SDE. Controllers have changed in regards to be MORE DURABLE, which on previous set that was a flaw. Overall, if you're in the market for a VR headset, and you have a budget of $500.00, then this would be your clear winner. You'll need to creative to solve some of the minor flaws that you identify but with enough creativity, you'll be able to improvise.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Screen is amazing.. Comfort.. Not so much I recieved my odyssey+ a week ago and I havent had much time with it, but I can tell you 2 things: 1- the screen is amazing. Best headset ive tried by far. It literally makes the SDE almost invisible. Its bright, colorful, and sharp. 2- this is not a comfortable headset for me. The foam is hard and doesnt fit well, the headphoes dont move out of the way so I can fit my big head in, and perhaps the worst is the nose fitting. Its just a cheap flap of rubber that will not fit anyone well and lets a ton of light through. I expect the aftermarket to come up with good solutions for both things. Notes: for first time wmr users like me... Have a Bluetooth reciever on your comp. Also make sure you have a free USB 3.0 port, and a free HDMI port or HDMI adapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great upgrade from a Rift There are many nice features about this... But at the end of the day if you put on your Rift after using this it will feel like you're staring through a black grid... the SDE + resolution difference is so large And I bought it at $500, not the discounted $300

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Headset So I have to say WOW this thing is amazing. The visuals are better than any VR headset I have tried to date. The anti SDE effect is something that every headset needs from here on out whether is 1k or 8k even the pimax 8k has SDE and this tech makes it go away. I still gave it 5 stars because it is the best available VR headset but it does kind of feel like wearing a vice on your head at times. I added some additional padding to the front and back of the halo to solve this issue. KUDOS to Samsung for big innovations on this headset other than the comfort. Headphones are great, screen will blow your mind, comfort needs work, tracking is great for WMR really glad they included a built in bluetooth in the headset. If I was going to change anything I would make it a little more comfortable and allow all pads to be removable not just the front cover and possibly add a few more cameras but that is probably more of a WMR/Microsoft issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great device! Good improvement over the original. PS: Samsung, please use your newest flexible AMOLED display to develop Odyssey 2 VR headset for 2019 or 2020, with 210 degree FOV like PIMAX and other new companies. This is reality view then. With 210 degree FOV and cinema like high resolution AMOLED experience. You have flexible display. Make it happen. 3840x2160 pixels per eye, 210 FOV, 300 grams weight, wireless?
