JVC GY-HC500 Reviews

Needs Cross Conversion

The best word to describe this camera is disappointing. I bought this camera hoping to record at a higher resolution for post production, even 1080p60 would be nice, but I'm forced to record at 720p60 due to needing a 720p60 output from the SDI for my live broadcast. This seems like a crazy oversight for a broadcast camera, I have a few Sony PXW-Z150 cameras also in my production lineup, that I rely on heavily due to them being more capable. I was hoping this camera could be more useful, especially with all the recording formats available, but I'm definitely underwhelmed.

Coming from a background with the GY-HM200SP, this camera was very easy to learn and use! Looking forward to possibly purchasing another!

Best I could find

With the advent of pocket devices producing acceptable results, camcorders producing images worth their price tag are relatively few. Very few stand up in lower light to my Sony CX900, this is one of them. My biggest issue with this camera is the SSD adapter. It didn't have to be proprietary, but it is. I managed to get a cable on to the port, managed to get it to see the SSD, but got the !Incorrect message. My main reason for writing this is that their are other reviews that seem to indicate Knock offs can be had for less than BH or what ever, this does not appear to be the case. Their must be something special about the adapter that allows the camera to recognize an imposter. The camera is great and will not disappoint. Some would complain about the boot time, which is quite a bit compared to everything else I've used. The included battery does get through a couple hours, I haven't tested it for much more than an hour. If you need to get through an entire day, plan on more batteries rather than reboots. It is disappointing to not have a touchscreen, but I'd sacrifice that for the better overall image quality.

Really do love this camera

It does everything and more that I could ask for. My one slight (and i mean slight) issue is that if you are at 30 frames per second you cant output anything other than 30 PsF to the SDI out. It just seems odd to me, if someone knows that I am doing something wrong let me know I would love to figure that out. Right now I just record at 50 frames, which is fine, my computer just would like it if when recording ISOs that I could go easier and not test out the cpu coolers upper limit.

I've always used JVC

I love this camera....my 4th JVC over the years.... It's lite and you and can load and go. Too many features to name. You should use the suggested memory for the caddy as I tried to be fancy and had to return some ultra large memory that was not compatible. Also buy the caddy on ebay as the full price is insane! Always JVC!

Hmmmm...

I've had great luck with JVC over the years... and was anxious to try this new camera. Gotta be honest, and I hate to say it, but this camera just isn't ready for prime time. It's too heavy to run and gun and the image quality is not good. Fuzzy and mushy when I need crisp and sharp. And I really wanted to like the internal SSD ProRes recording... but the whole caddy thing just feels clunky and weird. Heading over to buy the new Canon XF605 now.

Update after Warranty work

By Jeremy

After pretty complete testing I discovered I had a pretty substantial problem with the lens, plus the trailing effect in low light is simply unacceptable. I sent the unit in for warranty and they did replace the main board which somehow did fix the lens stability problem. As to the trailing effect, that is still present. Must be intended behavior since JVC didn't fix it. It's noticeable at normal lighting and really noticeable in low lighting. Locked the shutter at 1/120 which should have solved this problem, but it didn't. JVC Kenwood doesn't do a good job of communicating the work they performed and why, even after repeated inquiries. It's just plain pathetic that a professional camera can have it's but whooped by an iPhone/Pixel on a gimbal. This is not intended to be a negative toward BH, they are great.
