Apple Mac mini Late 2018 Overview

Apple has re-engineered the Mac mini (Late 2018) to drive tasks ranging from home automation to giant render farms, Xcode servers, industrial-grade operations, live concert sound engines, digital art and signage, testing iOS apps, and more. Upgraded with an 8th Generation Intel Core processor, the Mac mini features a more efficient thermal architecture, all-flash storage, a bigger fan, expanded vents, a redesigned power supply, and Apple's T2 security chip.

This Mac mini is powered by an 8th Gen Coffee Lake 3.0 GHz Intel Core i5 Six-Core processor that features a burst speed of up to 4.1 GHz, while 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM helps to ensure smooth multitasking and also allows the computer to quickly access frequently used files and programs. The system memory can be upgraded to a maximum of 64GB.

Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you'll be able to output video to an external display using the system's Thunderbolt 3 ports, which feature native DisplayPort output, or use the built-in HDMI 2.0 port. Up to three 4K displays are supported between any two Thunderbolt 3 ports and the HDMI port, or you can connect one 5K display and one 4K display.

For storage of your files, this Mac mini is equipped with a 256GB PCIe SSD that has a sequential read speed of up to 3.4 GB/s. If you want to add external peripherals, four Thunderbolt 3 ports support bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, while also supporting 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB 3.1), device charging, and an external GPU. Thanks to two 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) Type-A ports, you'll still be able to connect other devices to this system. Gigabit Ethernet is built in for wired networking, or use dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for wireless networking. Bluetooth 5.0 technology will allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals, including keyboards, mice, and headsets. Sound is output using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple's Mac mini (Late 2018) operates using an internal 150W power supply that runs off 100-240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz.

This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

General Features
Part Racehorse, All Workhorse
In addition to being a great desktop computer, the Mac mini powers everything from home automation to giant render farms. And now, with an 8th Generation 3.0 GHz Intel Core i5 Six-Core processor and Intel UHD Graphics 630, the Mac mini has even more computing power for industrial-grade tasks. So, whether you're running a live concert sound engine or testing your latest iOS app, the Mac mini is the shortest distance between a great idea and a great result.
Climb In, Geek Out
The Mac mini features 8GB of high-performance 2666 MHz DDR4 SO-DIMM memory for faster rendering, working with massive files, or running multiple virtual machines. And now you can configure even more memory - up to 64GB - to run even heavier workloads.
Haul Apps
This Mac mini has a 256GB PCIe SSD with sequential read speeds of up to 3.4 GB/s, so you can load giant files and launch apps quickly.
Apple's T2 Security Chip - Next-Gen Security

With a variety of ports, the Mac mini is ready for a variety of workflow configurations. Thunderbolt 3 is powerful and versatile, and the Mac mini has four of them. The HDMI 2.0 port delivers more bandwidth than its predecessor, so you can enjoy faster frame rates. For wired network access, take advantage of the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 gives you some productive possibilities. Transfer data at up to 40 Gb/s, charge and power external devices, connect up to two 4K displays—and even a third with HDMI 2.0—or one 5K display. Or, pair your Mac mini with an eGPU for desktop-class graphics performance.
Limited Warranty and Service
Your Mac mini comes with 90 days of complimentary technical support and a limited 1-year warranty. Purchase AppleCare+ for Mac to extend your coverage to three years from your AppleCare+ purchase date and add up to two incidents of accidental damage coverage, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other repairable damage, plus applicable tax.
To the Desktop, and Beyond
Because of its size, performance, and wide array of ports, the Mac mini goes where no Mac has gone before. And now, with even more cores packed into its 7.7" square frame, you never know where you'll find a Mac mini—or dozens of them—hard at work.

This is my first Mac. I have been a lifetime user of the PC. All of my other Apple devices work so well with the Mac. Wish I would have switched a long time ago.

I am sitting here writing this review on my mac mini I bought from B&H,use it nearly every day. It works fine and has not missed a beat, doing everything I have asked of it. Quality seems to be excellent and hoping it lasts a long time.

I Wanted an Inexpensive Mac Desktop

I purchased this i3 Mac Mini on sale at B&H and found it to be a good introduction to the Mac desktop. The Mini was received new and had MacOS Big Sur installed. Initially I had a problem upgrading to Monterey, but I think it was my failure to update to the latest version of Big Sur first. After I corrected my mistake the upgrade when without a hitch. I like the computer overall and it has been a good introduction to desktop MacOS. The Intel version has the advantage of using Bootcamp to run Windows 10, but I already have computers that run Windows. My Mini is connected to my Samsung 28 inch 4K display and it looks good. Mac scales splendedly to other equivalent resolutions from 4K to 1080P. Overall a nice little computer for the price I paid especially if you are curious about MacOS.

Great!

I have several of these mac-minis running almost 24/7, and I can whole-heartedly recommend them. Very reliable, well-made, compact...fits my needs perfectly.

Paired with a 4K monitor and it's Retina quality

I'm never a fan of Apple's new OS, but I am a huge fan of the Mac Mini which has served me well in different varieties going on about ten years. This Mac Mini doesn't dissappoint, it's rocket-fast, quiet, and just runs like it should with no issues. What I don't like is Apple's new OS, where they have completely changed the Finder view for looking at files and pictures. Many Mac users do design and photo editing, and I've always loved the feature of opening a folder and flying through thumbnails in the list all navigated by the mouse wheel. This feature is alarmingly gone in the latest few versions of Mac OS, and it's annoying because it's now slower to navigate thumbnail images because you have to click and swipe each one by one. There is absolutely no work around, and I have no idea why Apple did this to their creative-minded customers. Please note this is not a flaw in the Mac Mini, it's in Apple OS, but you should know about this if you plan to upgrade from an older OS. Also gone are the SD card reader (why?) and 4 highly coveted USB ports, you're now down to just a couple and you lose the mic jack. In place of the USB are extra Thunderbolt ports (who needs em!?), yes I know you can get adapters to run USB but since so many of us mostly have USB, wouldn't it make more sense to have more USB than the lame thunderbolt ports? This is easily solved by a cheap USB hub, just read reviews and get one that is compatible because the wrong one can fry your board. Now to the nicest surprise of all - pair this Mac Mini with a 4K monitor (I like LG 27) and whammo you've basically got a Retina display only available on costlier Macs. Warning: you will have trouble going back to a regular display after this. Another great feature that is exclusive to Apple (as far as I can tell), is they have this cool scaling feature when you increase resolution. Remember when larger HD monitors first came out and when you went up in resolution everything got ridiculously smaller on the screen? Like all text, and desktop icons? Well Apple has a nice workaround (finally, something I like in their OS) so as you go up in resolution, you have this cool scaling option where you can choose from 4 to 5 different size options for how text and images will look. So if you want to rock that 4K imagery you don't have to suffer having every single thing shrunken. To find this out ahead of time I did lots of research and played around with the iMac's at a local big box store, I got one of the sales reps to look up my question as to whether this would work with external monitors... and he said he was pretty sure it would because it's in the OS not just the iMac. He was right. It does work. And it's awesome! The best of both worlds. By the way, I originally purchased this Mac Mini from that big box store website (it was only available online), and the bozos shipped it in a thin vinyl envelope with zero packing padding. I immediately marched it down to the store for a return. Then I purchased the same item here on B&H and have been very happy. B&H packed it like it was shipping to Mars, a box inside a box with plenty of bubble wrap. Nice job, guys. Get this Mac Mini and pair it with an 4K monitor and it will look just like Retina. Enjoy.

Great upgrade to an old classic

Finally upgraded an old Mac Mini to this version, a base model, but plenty powerful for my needs. Getting the Intel version was also very helpful as I need Windows to run ArcPro, via Bootcamp. Set up was absolutely painless and everything is fast to load. B&H, as always, was stellar in their processing and delivery.

I think these later model Mac Minis are all hard wired to the board, and you cannot upgrade them. You have to select the RAM you want when you buy them.

This is a KVM switch. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/797586-REG/Iogear_GCS62HU_2_Port_HD_Cable_KVM.html This would allow you to connect two computers to a single monitor, Keyboard, and Mouse.

The processor is plenty fast enough but you will need a much larger hard drive than the one that came with mine. I had to transfer half my applications to an external drive to use the others. And remember, it does not have an internal disk burner.

Note the response was from 4/30/20 here we are 7/10/20 and there is no fix for this. My Mac mini was purchased 6/28/20 and it shows as a late 2018 too. According to multiple apple source there is technically no 2020 Mac mini...although they list it as new on their website. They refreshed the 2018 with a larger storage option announced in the spring 2020 keynote. Bad on apple for causing this confusion and bad on sellers for listing this as a true 2020 computer...bait and switch!

Asked by: Ragnar
Yes, the Apple Mac mini would just be outputting a video signal however the 2010 IMac would require "The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed. The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed." The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort cable."
