ION Audio VIDEO 2 SD Overview

The Video 2 SD Standalone VHS Conversion Recorder from ION Audio enables you to record footage from VHS, Hi8, Beta, or other sources as digital files. Capture your source material to a microSD card while viewing it on your TV or monitor via its HDMI or 1/8" A/V port. No computer is necessary to convert video with the Video 2 SD.

If you wish to transfer files to your computer, be aware that this converter records directly to a microSD card, not straight to your computer. You can use your computer to monitor the footage while recording but must switch to data mode to transfer the footage via the USB port or by inserting the microSD card into your computer's card slot. microSD cards must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and be ≤16GB.

A 1/8" plug to 3-RCA cable and a mini-USB to Type-A cable are included with the Video 2 SD Conversion Recorder. A standard 3-RCA to 3-RCA cable, an HDMI to HDMI cable, a USB to wall adapter, and a microSD card are not included. The Video 2 SD records files up to 2 hours and 42 minutes, after which point a new file clip is created.

Note:
Do not use the HDMI Out and A/V Out at the same time. If both are connected, only the A/V Out will work. To resume using HDMI, remove both the HDMI and /V Out cables, then reattach only the HDMI cable.

Not Reliable

Extremely compressed output to SD card!

This product is honestly pretty great as a composite - HDMI converter, and it's very easy to use and would work really well as an archival tool. However, I needed to have a maximum resolution output saved to the SD card, but the .avi files that it creates are horribly compressed to the point that they are unusable for my purposes (analog glitch art). It is a bit frustrating that nowhere on the product descriptions does it state that there will be that degree of compression. My solution here was that the HDMI output from this is still at maximum quality, so I ran that to an HDMI capture card and had good results. Besides that, this is solid as a conversion box or archival tool.

I received a unit that did not work, I tried for hours to make it work, even contacted ION support. It did not work. I had enough and sent it back. Maybe I just received a lemon, it happens sometimes. Good luck concept is good.

Make sure you have good cables and secure connections. I've used it monitoring with HDMI as well as (not connected at the same time) to an older RGB analog monitor - either way works fine. Follow their instructions and it works well but don't expect it to do miracles like make the images look like HiDef. Look at the image on the uploaded photo - the one on the left was done with the ION and the one on the right was done using Blackmagicdesign's interface simultaneously. As you can see the ION capture could use a little less brightness - other than that they are comparable. The Intensity is uncompressed and the ION comes out AVI which I converted to h.264 for both Mac and Windows compatibility which is what I usually do with the Intensity captures to save disk space. I power the ION by plugging it into my computer. After each capture I switch the ION to data mode and accessing the recorded file on my computer I rename the ION generic name to a proper descriptive name. I then switch the ION to TV Mode and record the next tape. When it comes time to convert the avi file to mp4 rather than use the USB access to the card in the ION (which has slow throughput) I remove the card from the ION and place it in the card reader on my computer, and send the avi files to my conversion software (in my case Wondershare Ultimate which does have some adjustments for exposure, saturation, and contrast). All in All for the price it's a good choice - it would be nice to have a little control over the video settings and if it would go directly to mp4 instead of avi - but what do you expect for the price.

It works!

Tried the $10 device from Amazon and had the same problems others had reported. Then tried this ION recorder and it has worked as advertised. Source is an old Toshiba VCR. After recording, I transfer the micro SD card to a 2014 MacBook Pro. Double clicking the file on the SD card opens it in QuickTime, where it can be saved as a .mov file. I then use Handbrake to convert it to a .mp4 file. Result is very close to playing the VCR directly to a TV. Recommend this recorder for digitizing old VCR tapes.

Too expensive

It works great, however, this device is the second one I bought. The last one just stopped working. Won't power up maybe the first was a lemon.

This is a low cost way to transfer composite video to an SD card. I use it in my car. It is hooked up to a forward mounted camera and sits in my glove compartment. The resulting video is not what one expects these days but it is very good. The next option up is way up and costs much, much more. For transferring VHS or other tapes I recommend a transfer kit that connects to you computer. I use a video tuner/capture card in my computer for such activities.

ION notes that the unit will only use a 16GB or smaller mini-SD card. Why not allow a larger card?
Asked by: Anonymous
Hi! Happy to help! 16GB is the largest size that we can guarantee will work reliably. If you need more space, the Video 2 SD can be connected directly to a USB port on your computer to transfer videos off of the card.

Can macrovision enabled tapes be transferred?
Asked by: Ean
No, that's not what this is for. You may have some success but the Macrovision is designed to distort the video if an attempt is made to copy a video that's Macrovision encoded. However, sometimes it's just a minimal distortion at the bottom of the screen. This would work well transferring home videos taken on your video camera.

Some reviews say that the recorded material playback has sync problems between the video and audio not keeping in time, is that true? And do you need a special speed SD card?
Asked by: Frank
this product does not have a time based corrector inside of it. this means for better or worse it will record the video/audio exactly as it receives it. it is not capable of fixing tracking/timing issues that exist on tapes. It is also a good idea to monitor the video while it is being recorded. If the video/audio plays in sync on your TV but is recorded out of sync on the recorder then there may be a problem with your recorder. In that event it is best to reach out to ION to see if they can help you troubleshoot the issue ION Audio Tel: (401) 658-3743
