BenQ PD3220U Overview

By B&H Photo's

The PD3220U DesignVue Designer 31.5" 16:9 HDR 4K IPS Monitor from BenQ has been built to satisfy designers' needs for color performance, with support for 100% of the sRGB and Rec. 709 color gamuts, 95% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, and HDR10. Driven by BenQ's AQCOLOR technology and an Ultra HD 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 with a 60 Hz refresh rate, the PD3220U helps deliver improved accuracy and productivity tailored for specific tastes. It does this using three special modes - CAD/CAM, Animation, and Darkroom - each of which is tailored for different scenarios, allowing users in different fields to achieve similar results.

The PD3220U features In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, an anti-glare panel coating, 10-bit support for 1.07 billion colors, a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, a static contrast ratio of 1000:1, a typical brightness 250 cd/m2 and a peak HDR brightness of 300 cd/m2, 140 ppi, and a 5 ms (GtG) response time. Using the 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles, it is possible to watch content from virtually any position. There are also two HDMI 2.0 inputs, one DisplayPort 1.4 input, and two Thunderbolt 3 ports that each support DP alt mode for daisy-chaining multiple displays and data transfers. One Thunderbolt 3 port supports devices charging up to 85W, while the other supports it up to 15W. Additional connectivity is achieved using one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port (data transfers only), three USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A ports (downstream), and one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-B port (upstream). Audio can be output using the dual integrated 2W speakers or the 3.5mm headphone jack.

BenQ's PD3220U also supports HDCP 2.2, Flicker-Free technology, Low Blue Light technology, Picture in Picture (PiP), Picture by Picture (PbP), and more. To further help improve viewing and accessibility, it features a vertical tilt of -5 to 20°, a left/right swivel of ±30°, a clockwise/counterclockwise pivot of 90°, a height adjustment of 5.91", and a 100 x 100mm VESA mount. It is certified for Mac, Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and 7, SolidWorks, and Calman.

Please note that the USB ports will only operate with data transmission speeds of 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 when using the Thunderbolt 3 video input. If DisplayPort or HDMI is used, the data transmission speeds will operate at 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1.

BenQ PD3220U Reviews

Returning it for The Second Time

By Trevor

I had a generally good experience with this monitor before I started experiencing issues with it. I bought it originally from Amazon, returned it and then bought another one from here on B&H because of the same issue. Over Thunderbolt, I started experiencing vertical lines showing throughout the display and then ultimately blue ghosts of images that were literally on screen for a couple of minutes. You can see in my photo below that it got to a point where the ghost image would stay on even if it wasn't connected to an input and would also stay through all inputs. I had started using HDMI primarily because of the vertical lines that would appear after a couple of hours of using it on Thunderbolt, but the ghosts began affecting everything. Mind you, this monitor was under 1 month old when all of this began. In addition, some things to consider are: - The brightness of the monitor is significantly less than the Liquid Retina XDR displays of 2021 or later MacBook Pros - The back cover to the ports is a pain not really ideal to take on and off - I wish the monitor recognized what input was being used and just switched the monitor to it like TVs do. But that may be asking too much.

A must have for a MacBook Pro M1

So far, this monitor is a terrific pairing with my MacBook. Great color and reduced my eye fatigue since I'm on a computer all day. I do want to note I had to send back the first BenQ I ordered due to significant light bleed issues. When I reached out to customer service, they were fantastic and started my return immediately. I reordered the same BenQ PD3220U, and after performing a light bleed and pixel test, the second unit was a keeper. The main reason for this purchase was for FCPX and photo editing, along with video conferencing and email work. Due to dealing with the return depart and customer service, I will buy through B&H again.

BenQ PD3220U Does The Job But Not Quite There !

I bought this as an additional monitor for my 16 Mac Book Pro, First of all the quality is great the Hotkey Puck works as described the only complaint is the image is fairly flat compared to my macbook pro and my 27 imac. Keep in mind this monitor only has 140 ppi and typical brightness 250 cd/m2 and a peak HDR brightness of 300 cd/m2 with the matt finish supplied on the screen makes the image flat and sort of dull but does cut down on reflections. Other than that this monitor has plenty of ports and features. Keep in mind you will have to be in a very dark room to do any color grading, I was expecting this monitor to be a little more on the crisp side as far as detail being advertised as a 4k monitor. I guess the only way to step up to a higher quality monitor is to spend more $$$$.

Excellent choice for MacBook

When considered against the Mac 27" display, the additional realpolitik does not make up for the lost screen area. When multiplied by two - and adding the cost, this is the best solution. There is a reason so many people use these. Very happy with my choice and would do it again. Whe combined with B&H's next day delivery - included, now you really can't hole a candle To it!

The monitor was incredibly easy to set up with my Mac Studio, the colors are outstanding, the size is perfect, and the stand is awesome. Great monitor for the price.

in addition is has hardware calibration whereas the Benq does not. A calibrator is definitely needed for the benq to get it accurate. out of the box it is not close in terms of color. as mentioned brightness could be better also. I have found issues with using any port other than hdmi, with weird issues on switching automatically into HDR mode from thunderbolt.
