Solid State Logic Alpha VHD Overview

The Solid State Logic Alpha VHD-Pre is a 1 RU rackmount 4-channel microphone preamplifier offering high gain and versatile color for musicians, producers, and engineers in homes, studios, and live stage applications. With up to 75 dB of gain and per-channel Variable Harmonic Drive, the Alpha VHD-Pre is a preamp that can deliver anything from clean and smooth tones for soft vocals to ragged and gritty distortion for pounding drums.

Each channel also features adjustable output gain, a -20 dB pad, and selectable 48V phantom power. The rear panel houses four XLR 3-pin mic/line inputs and four XLR 3-pin line outputs, while the front panel presents four 1/4" TS Hi-Z instrument inputs with impedance detection and level matching. The Alpha VHD-Pre occupies 1 RU of rack space and includes an external power adapter with a detachable power cable.

Transparent SSL preamps with 75 dB of gain
-20 dB pad switches that illuminate to indicate overload
Four independent VHD (Variable Harmonic Drive) systems, first featured on SSL's flagship Duality console
Individual input, output, and VHD controls for each section
The Variable Harmonic Drive circuit uses a 100% analog signal path to generate rich harmonic distortion; as you increase the input gain, the Variable Harmonic Drive circuit introduces either 2nd or 3rd harmonic distortion or a blend of the two
Selectable 48V phantom power per channel
Hi-Z switches to accommodate mic-, line-, and instrument-level signals
Front-panel 1/4" instrument/line inputs with passive DI-type impedance detection and level matching
Rear-panel XLR mic/line inputs and XLR outputs
Occupies 1 RU of rack space
