  • Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm and 45-150mm Lenses (Black)

An all-around Micro Four Thirds camera designed for photographers and videographers, the black Lumix DMC-GX85 from Panasonic features a compact build and intuitive layout, along with a feature-set to suit a multimedia lifestyle. Utilizing a 16MP Live MOS sensor, which lacks an optical low-pass filter for increased sharpness, the GX85 is capable of shooting continuously at up to 10 fps with single-shot autofocus, or 6 fps with continuous autofocus, as well as up to 40 fps when using an electronic shutter function. UHD 4K video recording is also supported in 30 and 24 fps frame rates, as well as Full HD 1080p, and the 4K recording abilities also permit shooting 8MP stills at a 30 fps rate. A sensitivity range up to ISO 25600 permits working in difficult and low-light settings while 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization also helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Spanning a broad range of features for both still and moving images, the GX85 is a versatile mirrorless camera further characterized by its sleek form factor and connected functionality.

Complementing the imaging attributes, the camera also incorporates both a 2.76m-dot electronic viewfinder as well as a 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD, which has a tilting design to better enable working from high and low angles. Built-in Wi-Fi is also integrated into the design, which facilitates wireless image transferring and remote camera control from linked smartphones or tablets.

    16MP Live MOS Sensor
Using a 16MP Live MOS sensor, the GX85 is capable of capturing clear, high-resolution stills as well as UHD 4K video. The sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution, and its design also affords a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, fast shooting performance is also afforded, with the ability to shoot at up to 40 fps with an electronic shutter function, 30 fps at 8MP using the 4K Photo Modes, 10 fps with AF-S and an electronic shutter, or 8 fps using a mechanical shutter with AF-S.
    UHD 4K Video Recording
In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the GX85 also supports recording UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100 Mbps in the MP4 format. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported, in both MP4 and AVCHD formats, as well as HD and SD resolutions. A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter for cleaner audio quality when shooting outdoors.
    4K Photo Modes
Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
    • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
    • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
    • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.
    Dual Image Stabilization
Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. combines the GX85's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.
    Depth-From-Defocus AF Technology
For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in order to suit working with continuous shooting rates up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.
    Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
    • An integrated 2.76m-dot electronic viewfinder offers a bright, clear eye-level means for composing images, and features a 0.7x effective magnification.
    • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear OLED monitor has a tilting design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
    • Nine programmable function buttons can be used to control a wide variety of settings and tools.
    • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets.
    Lumix G Vario 12-32mm and 45-150mm Lenses
A versatile standard zoom, the Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. is a 24-64mm equivalent wide-to-short tele featuring a sleek design to pair well with the compact camera body. Three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element are incorporated within the lens design to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations in order to increase image clarity and sharpness. Complementing the optical design is an internal focusing system and stepping motor that pairs with the camera's contrast-detection AF for quick, accurate focusing performance.

Also included is the long-reaching telephoto zoom Lumix G Vario 45-150mm f/4-5.6 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S. lens, which provides a 90-300mm equivalent focal length range. The lens's design features one UHR element and two aspherical elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination. This lens also features a stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and movie shooting. Additionally, MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld in difficult lighting conditions.
    Other Camera Features
    • A mechanical focal plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 sec, as well as a top flash sync speed of 1/160 sec. An electronic shutter function also avails a top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings.

Panasonic DMC-GX85 Reviews

Lumix DMC-GX85 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera with 12-32mm and 45-150mm Lenses and Accessories Kit (Black) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mirrorless camera I was looking for something smaller than full size DSLR, something like a classic rangefinder camera,  which I would be able to use for travel and landscape photography. After a lot of research, I have decided to buy this set. I can say that for $497 for camera plus 2 lenses, it is well worth the money. You may check full review on YouTube called Panasonic GX85/GX80 Hands-On Field Test. In addition to all micro-four-third lenses, this camera allowed me to use my old manual focus Minolta and Canon lenses too. IQ is great, in-body stabilization works with old lenses too. You can use full-auto or configure all settings manually if you prefer that. Very good camera with interchangeable lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great M43 camera to check out the format I was tired of lugging around my Nikon set up, looking for something lighter, but better than my phone.  I also purchased the Oly 12-40 zoom and the Panasonic/Leica 15mm.  I also used a Nikon lens adapter for my legacy 50mm.   I enjoy being able to manually adjust settings, and have the option for auto.   I just finished a trip into Yellowstone on snowmobiles, so found a couple of issues.  When it was cold, the lens release button would not latch on a new lens. so if shooting in the cold, dont change lenses.  Also, when I would pull it out of my camera bag, it was easy to accidentally turn the mode wheel, usually ending up on the art setting.  So wish it had a mode lock. The camera however takes great pics, and is certainly a great price for an entry M43.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing deal at $497.00 for 4K video and nice stills I bought this as a B camera for video because it went on sale. The in body stabilization and 4k video capability combined with the interchangeable lenses is amazing for the $500 range.  Nice to have a touch screen for focus and menu navigation. Not great in low light. Cant focus manually easily with the kit lens (no focus ring on it). Kit lens is surprisingly sharp. Pretty good autofocus. Not sure how useful the longer lens will be for me. Takes really nice stills and the Lmonochrome black and white mode is really nice.  For video, you can hack in Cinelike D into one of your custom settings (see youtube videos). No log profiles. Not great in low light. Like many cameras, a bit rough to navigate menu. A bit small for the weight, feels like it might be easy to drop. Great to pop in your pocket. Would be great for low key public 4k shooting. Strong in body stabilization.  Programming the function buttons is essential, though you only have three custom settings that you can save. I found it helpful to program the f1 button with the dial operation switch which lets you quickly access white balance and ISO. Quck menu button is handy for video. The touch screen is nice for quick menu navigation.  I got simple adapters for under $20 and can put on vintage lenses (FD, OM, etc) At $500 w/ the 2 kit lenses this is a really great deal and kind of a no brainer if the specs work for you. Not so sure at the normal $1,000 price. At that price, Id go with something else. Check out DP Review for a thorough review of this camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1st mirrorless camera does not disappoint.... I have been wanting to go mirrorless for awhile now. Until recently I have been lugging around an older Canon 7D with a variety of lenses, The canon was OK for planned shoots, but much more of a burden to carry for just casual shooting during family outings and general photography.  Most people swear by the phone camera these days as being good enough. I am not part of that camp. While I feel my iPhone 6s is fine for photos in the daylight, for the most part, low light photos are almost worthless.  By trade, I am a video shooter and I have a mid-level Panasonic AG-AC90 as my weapon of choice, for now. I wanted to stick with the same brand for the sake of things looking similar in terms of color if I decided to use the GX85 for video. Plus I have really enjoyed Panasonic products in the past.  After looking into the mirrorless cameras and deciding that I cannot afford 3K for a camera body at this point, I wanted something that would take quality photos, offer interchangeable lenses and be lighter and more fun to bring along on everyday trips.  The price of this camera dropped almost $400 this year, and that seemed like a good time to get in on this. I watched a lot of Youtube videos about the specs and what it does. I was sold that this was my next camera.  Cut to three weeks later. I have done a lot in a very short time, shooting in a variety of lighting situations and mostly using it on AUTO mode only at this point (I know sacrilege) but I wanted to see what it could do right out of the box before getting into manual settings and all that.  I have to say I am more than pleased with the performance of this camera. The two kit lenses are really capable, not the fastest lenses certainly, but very nice. Its light and does not draw attention to myself when I am shooting in museums or other public places.  The other thing I like is that it shoots in 4K, as a video guy this was great. Many other reviews mention that the lack of a mic/headphone jack is a negative, I only find it mildly annoying. I have plenty of other ways to capture quality sound, but I could see where a vlogger would be annoyed. The onboard mic was much more capable than I thought it would be. I was filming our Christmas morning with this camera, and the sound was surprisingly good. It picked up everything in the room and did not sound awful. As someone that is especially harsh on bad sounding videos, I was not annoyed. If you take it outside and its windy you would be screwed. The lenses are light, but not cheap feeling, I have mostly used the 12-32, which I did not think I would use as much as I do, I have not used the 45-150 as much, but it still gives great sharp images. I also recently purchased a used Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 to add to my bag. Again very sharp.  The camera also has a tilting screen that I really like. I didnt have that before, I can look at shots when I hold the camera low or high and still keep my framing. What I immediately fell in love with, was the size and weight. Its like night and day from carrying around a heavy old DSLR. Now I really do want to carry a camera around anywhere. Switching lenses is super easy.  I do want to add the 42.5mm f/1.7 to my bag and pretty much have that as my kit. Any other lens I would rent for any special shoots.  Ive already got big plans for it, including a trip to Disneyland and a huge trip to Yellowstone in the summer. I am already impressed with the image quality, the ease of use and lens selection and quality/sharpness of what Panasonic offers. Its a nice lead in to possibly getting the GH5 down the road.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this camera After shooting 35mm for decades I dropped out of the photo thing when it all went digital.  Just wasnt right anymore.  For the last couple yrs have been thinking of getting back in. Liked the rangefinder styling. After researching, the mirrorless design appealed to me as well.  Finally pulled the trigger, and glad I did. The lightweight size is great, and the digitalness of it all, well, isnt all that bad either. I can point and shoot in P mode, or take my time and use S/A/M modes when the mood strikes.  This little marvel delivers great shots in darn near all conditions. Its a perfect gateway camera to get me back in the game. And with an adapter I can use all my familiar old 35mm glass, which is nice. Just wish I hadnt waited so long to make the purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Micro 4/3 Snapper This is quite an impressive camera with all its features. Love the touch screen and the offset viewfinder. The bonus with this camera is the extra lens - a Lumix 45 to 150mm f/4 lens. Oh, and the added goodies of a 32 GB memory card, UV filter and small camera bag add to the bargain buy. The only disappointment with my order - I was never notified that the camera was delivered by FedEx. Lucky no Porch Pirates  got to it before I did :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I needed I was looking for a small light camera to carry around with me that would produce better images and be more flexible than my Iphone. I used to have a Panasonic LX 3 and really like it for that purpose, so I decided to go with another Panasonic, and B&H had a great deal on this camera. I am still getting used to it but so far the only real complaint is that it is a bit too heavy for its size, but that is something Im sure Ill get used to.
