This is mainly to be used with macro subjects in the studio and in the field. A very simple, solid design which should last for years. I have purchased several Oben products, including a tripod, geared head, and focusing rail - all are built well and much less expensive than some of the other quality brands.

Mounting the bar to a tripod, and cameras to the bar, are brilliantly ergonomic. Everything locks up rock solid.

Is the bar fixed in the middle position or can it be fully extended laterally?

The Oben TAB-2M is not laterally fixed; you are able to vary the position of the accessory bar relative to its mounting bracket/point in the middle and can alter the length/positioning of each side.

Can I use one of these vertically on the side (If I had two) so it would be like a vertically adjustable column?

Assuming you have a special reason for doing this, you can attach one vertically. The weight of anything you put on it would have to be balanced from the other side though for the horizontal piece to slide without binding as well as to keep it from falling.
