Korg VOLCADRUM Overview

From Manufacturer

The Korg Volca Drum is a digital percussion synthesizer that harnesses the power of physical modeling to create sounds and patterns unlike most other drum machines, making it well suited for musicians and producers working in the studio or performing live on stage. The machine utilizes dual-layer drum parts, comprehensive motion sequencing, and sequencer tricks to generate a variety of standard percussive sounds and eccentric drum styles.

The Volca Drum provides six parts, each with two layers, from which the user selects any one of 5 oscillator waveforms including sine, sawtooth, and HPF noise. Additionally, the user can select from three types of pitch modulators and amplifier envelope generators, each optimized for drum sounds. Edit layers separately or together while adding bit reduction, wave-folder depth, overdrive, and distortion. A waveguide resonator adds sympathetic resonances to the sound and provides two selected types including tube, which adds the resonance of a cylindrical object such as a drum body or a long pipe; or strings, which adds the metallic resonance of a string.

The onboard step-sequencer allows the user to manually input up to 16 steps per pattern, but also can be used for real-time recording. The pattern chaining function can chain up to 16 sequences to construct patterns with up to 256 steps. Use the motion sequence function to record knob movements during real-time recording and reproduce them during playback. There are a total of 69 different parameters that can be recorded and played back. Additional features and functions include Active Step, which replaces steps for each part; and Slice, which finely divides a step to allow drum-rolls; an Accent function that can be specified in 16 levels; and a convenient Choke function for specific grouping of parts.

The Volca Drum can be synchronized with other Volcas and Electribes via the trigger I/O. Additionally, the machine features a standard 5-pin DIN connector for connecting to other sequencers, allowing the unit to perform as a drum module. The Korg Volca Drum is powered by an optional power supply or via the included six AA batteries.

Korg VOLCADRUM Reviews

A Fantastic & Creative Percussion Synth

The Korg Volca Drum is a super fun & creative percussion synthesizer. This Volca definitely is unique. It offers six parts each with layers of two individual sounds per part that can be edited separately or together. Programming is very immediate and the controls invite tweaking without having read the manual. However there are a few settings that aren't immediately intuitive which are accessed with the edit/step button and then scrolled through by the select/parameter knob. These potentially overlooked settings really do add to the sound giving bit reduction, wave folding, overdrive, panning, and gain adjustment. The three distortions here add a bit of grit to the sound and in my experience don't degrade the sound too much either, being mostly consistently useable at maximum settings. The motion record opens up the sound design potential quite a bit even if it is a shame that motion recording isn't available for the resonator parameters. I especially enjoy motion recording the rate of the LFO modifier. So many types of synthetic percussion can be made with this synth and, with choke groups, you can treat multiple sounds as a single instrument set. Programming on the Volca Drum is a joy. I plan on holding onto mine probably forever.

Great Sounds, cool idea

I use this mainly for sound design of drum sounds for samplers I own. It punches above it's weight class and I have gotten amazing sounding results with it, but it's a very frustrating device in some ways. There are two layers per drum sound and it's very easy to mess up your settings while working. Pros: This is a great drum synth machine capable of generating drum sounds from almost realistic to other worldly. The quality of sound is great. Quick to learn. The sequencer is solid. Connectivity is pretty decent for this size of device with sync in/out, midi and headphone out. The randomize functionality is very cool and well executed. Cons: No included power cable. Unforgiving interface for sound design can be fiddly and frustrating. The speaker blew out during normal usage which isn't bad, because I don't use it that way. Bottom line: I love what this thing can do, I hate using it sometimes. The sound design tools are amazing and it's actually the most capable outboard drum synth I have, but the controls make it difficult to tweak a sound.
