Purchased this to hold a Sony RX100 to a monopod. The ball head clamp was not up to holding it without moving. The tolerances are just too loose and the screw mechanism does not do a good job clamping. Would not put anything on it that weighs over a few ounces.

Wanted something a little larger than the many Giottos MH1004 mini ball heads already in my gear bag and this one deserves high praise. Good price/performance ratio and with the removable knurled top platform, the HB-01 is perfect for multiple grip applications and even for small P&S cameras. I added a small AS clamp to one and it is a perfect match. If the bottom attachment threads were 3/8-16 with reducer bushing, the added versatility would have demanded a solid 5-star rating. Overall, it is still a great product!

Can the platform be removed by unscrewing, or is it fixed in place?
Yes, the knurled platform, which measures 4.5mm x 28mm, can be unscrewed, leaving a threaded post 10mm in length. The knurled platform has a thin rubber-like material on one side to protect mating surfaces.

So there's no more confusion. See the 5th photo down from the top. See the "working platform". Can it be unscrewed off the the stud, or is it part of the stud? To be clear, the working platform is just below the 1/4" threads where the camera or flash or supported device would be attached.
The working platform cannot be unscrewed from this system.
