Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro Overview

Covering a versatile wide-angle to short-telephoto range, the Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro O.I.S. from Panasonic is a flexible zoom, featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture, for L-mount mirrorless cameras. In regard to its optical design, a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements are used to control a variety of aberrations, color fringing, and distortion in order to realize a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. Balancing its optical performance, this zoom is also unique due to is 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 11.8" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects. Additionally, an Optical Image Stabilizer helps to control the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting and the lens sports a weather-sealed design for use in harsh conditions.

Standard 24-105mm zoom is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 36-157.5mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.
Four aspherical elements, including two made from extra-low dispersion glass, help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
One ultra extra-low dispersion element and two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
Macro design provides half life-size 1:2 magnification ratio and a minimum focusing distance of 11.8" for working with close-up subjects.
Optical Image Stabilizer minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting, and also supports 5-Axis Dual I.S. 2 for increased stabilization performance.
AF/MF switch permits quick changing between focusing modes and a zoom lock switch can be used to prevent the lens from extending when not in use.
Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions down to -14°F.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm f/4 Macro Reviews

Nice all in one/travel lens

I bought it with the S5II body. Overall I'm happy with the item. I have had it for a few weeks, and I've shoot both photos and videos. I did not do an extensive test, just put it to moderate use. So far, sharpness is good enough for me, bokeh is more than what I expected from an F4. I like the constant F4, I really love the 24-105mm range and stabilization (I came from the Tamron 28-200mm for E mount, which I always wish a wider end and stabilization). The size and weight (along with the S5II body) is a bit bigger than I expected, but I'm willing to accept it considering everything it offers. It balances ok with the S5Ii body. I did find the focus to be a bit slow sometimes, and this could also be the body not the lens. What I can say is, after using it for a couple weeks, I sold my Sony A7III and Tamron 28-200. Pro: range of focal length some macro ability stabilization sharpness more bokeh than I expected from a F4 having switches on the lens Con: some soap bubble effect in the bokeh, looks a little busy size and weight focus is a bit slow sometimes

versatile, practical and well thought out, not bad.

Having owned the Lumix dc-s1r now for close to two years and taken 2000 plus photos using 8 of their Lumix lenses I own, I thought I would clarify this lens for those who may snub it like I did. When first released without the film-ware update I had major problems with accurate focus etc. The renditions were not even close to the Lumix 50mm f1.4 prime lens I owned. Last month , after shooting fall landscapes for a week, I placed it back on the camera having the new film-ware. My original reservations by and large have vanished and I found myself enjoying photography without changing lenses as often. The 24mm widest range is really pretty sharp and I find the 105mm to be a great match for an occasional quick portrait. Wide open or stopped down this lens performs at about 85% to 90%quality of the 4 additional Lumix zooms I own. The macro is actually better than I tested before and the lens, along with the stabilization is really a portable dream to use. Color is excellent and out of focus areas are not bad at all. Just thought I should share my original reservations and final conclusions.

Image quality is great but watch the OIS button

Have been using this lens with the Pan S1H for over a year now. Very pleased with the image quality and focusing speeds. It's heavy, but that's understandable given the quality of image. My only gripe is the OIS button - it takes very little to switch it off. Simply grasping the lens wrong or having the lens bump something (body part, backpack) can move the switch. On several occasions it wasn't until post production that I realized the switch had been turned off. Sure, the S1H viewfinder can show that OIS has been disabled on the lens, but when you're paying more attention to the fundamentals of capturing the moment this is easy to overlook.

This Panasonic 24/105 F4 lens takes great photos as well as being a great video lens! You can still get some nice bokeh at F4 to 5.6, the background is soft and pleasing to the eye of course!! Great starter lens for the S1R or the SL2!

This is an excellent all-around lens for my Lumix S1H. However the first one that I received was defective and would not auto focus. I had to exchange it and the second one works beautifully.

This is the most versatile lens I've ever owned. Very good AF and fairly small for what it is.

Is this lens focus by wire?
Asked by: William
It is worth adding that you can select the "type" of focus by wire, namely linear, and also set the rotation throw allwoing this lens to work well with focus-pulling and automated setups like the Nucleus M when you install gears. The behaviour is controllable through the menu system, and therefore highly predictable unlike most focus by wire lenses I have used. I have two of these lenses, I wanted to not like them but they are remarkable in use with S1 and S1R when the camera is configured.
