Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 Overview

  • 1Description

Combining impressive speed and optics, the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 is a sophisticated normal-length prime for L-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its fast f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens excels in low-light conditions and also affords improved control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements, which reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity throughout the aperture range. Complementing the optics is a unique double focus system, which utilizes both a linear motor and a stepping motor, to provide especially fast and precise focusing performance. Additionally, a rounded 11-blade diaphragm helps to achieve smooth, pleasing bokeh and the lens also sports a weather-sealed design for working in harsh conditions.

Prime normal-length lens is designed for full-frame L-mount mirrorless cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two aspherical elements help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.
Three extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing in order to produce a high degree of clarity and color accuracy.
A double focus system employs both a linear motor and a stepping motor to deliver impressively fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance.
Manual focus clutch allows you to simply push or pull the focusing range to quickly switch between AF and MF focusing modes.
Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions down to -14°F.
Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

    Panasonic Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 Reviews

    Lumix S PRO 50mm f/1.4 Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shockingly Great I had not used a 50mm lens since I first started. These particular prime lenses were very tainted to me because they have always been soft in just about all brands. Sigma changed that with their 50mm Art but this LUMIX lens is on another level even from that. It’s just razor sharp but yet with super soft fall off. It’s an expensive lens but if you value this level of quality you will want to have it in your collection. The build quality is outstanding.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 50mm Lens to Beat Image quality with this lens is nearly indistinguishable whether youre shooting at f/1.4 or f/8.  My shots are tack-sharp, yet bokeh and falloff are smooth and progressive.  Autofocus is quick and quiet and the MF clutch with a linear focus scale is game-changing.  Its large and heavy, but otherwise very hard to fault.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens!! I rented this lens for a wedding, I used it mostly for video with the DS1. By far the best lens Ive ever used, I shot a lot on 1.4 and my subjects were still incredibly sharp with silky smooth background. The worst thing about this lens is that it makes all my other pictures and video look like garbage (as they were shot with different lenses). This lens sets a new standard in quality. Now Im saving up! Very happy with its performance - coupled with the DS1 is a match made in heaven!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's a Dream This lens was supposedly built as the standard with which every new L lens should be measured by.. and I truly hope that's true. The quality from the build, to the color rendition, handling, and falloff is nothing short of stunning. My only critique is that it's a bit large, but if that's what they must do to make this beauty what it is, then so be it. It's awesome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow. Sharp. Rented this lens for a few weeks for a few shoots and, wow, this lens is sharp. Super sharp. It's heavy and big for a 50mm f1.4, but Panasonic was definitely going for superior sharpness with this lens - and they delivered. Incredible image quality.

Does the manual focus ring have a hard stop at infinity?
    Asked by: Saravana
There are hard stops at both end of the focus ring while in manual focus mode. This is available with a push/pull action on the focus ring.

What is the point of this lens? Wouldn't it make sense for it to be f1.2 or even f1.0 for the price?
    Asked by: Elliot
Go listen to a short video from PhotoJoseph on Youtube, he explains all the technicalities that makes it more expensive. And those technicalities go way beyond the aperture number. For example a clickless aperture diaphragm.
