what is the difference between the q80 and the ql80r?
Asked by: skip
Supposedly they sound has been improved, and now you get a centered pedestal instead of the feet. We haven't seen them, but, I've heard of no major improvements. The 2020 models are Q80T. The 2019 models are Q80R. There is no simple Q80. They are all Q80.

What width and length screws do the mounting ...

What width and length screws do the mounting holes need?
Asked by: Ryan
The 400 mm x 400 mm VESA mounting holes on the QN75Q80R take M8 screws. Please note that internal threading of these holes does not begin until one is 30 mm (about 1-3/16") deep into the hole) and, at that point, there are but 4.5 full turns of engagement available before 'bottoming out.' At a screw pitch of 1.25 mm per thread, that's just 5.625 mm (0.22 inches) of threaded depth at the bottom of the hole. Yikes. OK, that's "enough" of a hold to be secure, but really "just enough" for this 75-inch / 82-pound bad boy. It means you have to plan very carefully and with full knowledge of the thickness of tabs on your wall mount system, thickness of washers and spacers, etc. - so that you can have 34.5 - 35.5 mm of threading on your M8 screws to insert into the VESA holes (i.e., so you can use at least three-and-a-half of the four-and-a-half available threads down at the end of the hole). Ask me how I know this... I got there (with my Sanus VLF728-B2 mounting system) by using the four Sanus-supplied 50 mm long M8 screws, coupled with the four 7 mm spacers that came with the TV (placed just under the screw heads [instead of the Sanus washers]) followed by 3.3 mm worth of Sanus mounting tabs and then, finally, the four Sanus-supplied 5 mm spacers. If you add that up you get 7 3.3 5 = 15.5 mm "outside the hole." With the 50 mm screws this left (50 - 15.5 mm =) 34.5 mm of screw to go into the hole (well, after any compression of the spacers, maybe up to 35.0 - 35.5 mm): exactly what was required. Phew. But should it be this hard? Why didn't Samsung simply provide more threading at the end of the VESA holes?? After cursing them mightily for being so 'chinzy' on threading, the only thing that occurred to me that could even remotely justify the paltry number of threads was some engineering need to place the point where the weight-bearing occurs that deep within the hole, and NOT closer to the back of the TV. Or did I simply receive a QN75Q80R that was not properly manufactured in this regard? I doubt it. But even if the threading I received is normal, it's never explained, and Samsung never cautions the consumer in its User Manual about the requirement for such exactitude in planning the wall-mounting of this beast. I mean, should it really require a micrometer just the right combination of spacers, etc. unlimited patience - and all those requirements only to be discovered on the weekend you decide to do the mounting, and when your wall-mount kit may not have the combination of HW needed? Or just pay to have someone else do it? And live in blissful ignorance, never knowing that the installer caught just one thread on each screw? Forgive the long-winded rant from an engineer, but ... ;)
