What would be a good needle for playing 78 rpm records?
Audio-Technica recommends using a stylus that is designed specifically for playing 78 rpm records and choosing a model based on the type of material the record is made from. For shellac records (pre-1958), a stylus with a diameter of 3 mil like the Audio-Technica AT-VM95SP Dual Moving Magnet Cartridge (B&H # AUATVM95SP) would be a good option. The AT-VM95SP/H is the same stylus with a headshell (B&H # AUATVM95SPH). For mono vinyl records, a 0.6 mil conical stylus like the AT-VM95C Dual Moving Magnet Cartridge (B&H # AUATVM95C) is good choice. The AT-VM95C/H is the same stylus with a headshell (B&H # AUATVM95CH).
