Zoom B1 Four Overview

From Manufacturer

The Zoom B1 Four is a multi-effects processor designed for use with electric basses. Offered in an easy to use stompbox format, the B1 Four sports a wide selection of effects, amp emulations, and other features, such as an onboard 30-second looper and a chromatic tuner. With 68 built-in rhythm patterns, you can add drum loops to the mix, which can be quite helpful during looping.

Distortion, chorus, and more are all on hand, as are 9 bass-amp models that simulate classic combinations. Five effects can be chained at any time and in any order. You can save these effects in one of the 50 user preset patches. Switch among patches (or banks of patches) quickly with the tap of a toe, so you can change your live or studio sound with ease. You can also change global characteristics to retain a sense of unity among patches. A three-knob tone stack and the overall output level knob do not change as you cycle through your sounds.

The pedal sports 60 different effects, and you can edit or add more effects from your computer too. Simply hook the pedal up to your Mac or Windows machine over a USB cable and add effects from Zoom's Guitar Lab software.

The B1 Four provides one 1/4" instrument input, one 3.5mm input for mobile devices and media players, and a combined amp/headphone output. The unit runs on four AA batteries, giving you up to 18 hours of run time. You can also power the unit with a dedicated ZOOM AD-16 AC adapter or over USB.

Zoom B1 Four Reviews

very useful, albeit a bit clunky

so this thing can do a lot, but it took some time to figure that out. the interface isn't very user intuitive, so if you're a drive right in kind of person - I'd suggest you stop and watch a youtube tutorial. I was quite disappointed with the presets, but once I figured out how to edit everything, I discovered this little powerhouse is about as good as it gets for the money.

Bass-ically wonderful...

I'm a bass player who also plays guitar. All of my pedals are analog. My first foray into digital pedals was the Zoom MS-60B. At first, I was very disappointed for what it didn't do well. I bought it hoping the overdrives and octaves would be good enough to replace a few analog pedals. For me, they weren't. I then explored it for effects I did not buy it for and found that it does some things very well. I like the compression and EQs quite a bit. After Zoom put out the firmware update, I found this pedal was great for reverbs and delays for guitar. The phasers and choruses are pretty good as well. I don't create patches with this but use it as a Swiss army pedal. What I wish they'd do is let you save all settings for each individual effect and then be able to check off which appear in the rotation. For my use, it will only retain the settings for the last effect used. To do what I want, I'd have to save each effect that I like as a patch.  When the B1on/G1on series came out, I couldn't justify the bass version so I bought the guitar version which is a blast. I don't use it through an amp, just into headphones. When this new Four series came out to replace the on series, I checked them both out. To be honest, I thought the guitar version lost too much to make up for any gains. The bass version fares a better. Though it doesn't have as many effects or patch slots, for the most part, it sounds better and is certainly easier to program. I had hopes they would increase the loop time from 30 seconds to at least 1 minute and, more importantly, add the option to delete the last layer. They did neither. All in all, this is a terrific pedal for my use which is just for playing around through headphones. I personally wouldn't use it for live work. Scrolling can be problematic. They do give the option of locking in 1 bank so you can move your 10 favorite patches and only scroll through those instead of all 50. As I mentioned, this series has fewer patches but one nice thing is that there are 10 blank patches so you can create new ones without overwriting the original ones. This series also have the same annoyance for my use in that it will only retain changes to patches, not individual effects. I forgot to mention that the synth effects are much better in this than the previous model. I wish they'd make a pedal that combined the bass and guitar effects into the same unit.
