GNARBOX GBX20-X5-CFAST Reviews

inconsistent

I deal with media constantly. I've been transferring data using all kinds of hardware styles; P2, Red Mags, SD, CFast, CF Express, Sony XQD, etc... for over 15 years. This thing is completely inconsistent. Very frustrating. It'll work like it should somedays and others it won't without any explanation. If your job involves turning over media quickly, stay away from this product. That being said, I don't believe I've used either the SD or Micro SD ports on the reader so they might work just fine. If you need consistent data transfer using the CFast 2.0 port look somewhere else. Also B&H is a great store and this review doesn't reflect them in the least.

Fails...every time without fail, buy something else.

DO NOT BUY!! STRAIGHT RIP OFF!!!! WASTE OF MY MONEY AND TIME!!! Let me explain... I bought one of the more expensive Cfast card readers hoping to have some reliability for ONCE with these readers. But I have had nothing but problems with this card reader. MORE SO than a $15 Rocketek. At first it would do this thing where it connects, disconnects, connects, disconnects, over and over again. I thought it could be my USB-C port failing me, but other drives would read through that port no problem. Now its a USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C port on my motherboard- exactly what they said was the type it works with. I then started to use it with a USB 3.1 Type -A cable, and it would work but only half the time if I was lucky. Most of the time it would be cruising along at 350mb/s then drop to 0, freeze my CPU and File Explorer causing me to have to restart my file explorer or worse the whole CPU to get it unfrozen. I would battle my way through like that getting 1 - 3 video clips at a time. I thought it was something wrong with my computer like the ASMedia drivers or something, so I worked with a friend to dial in my drivers and device controllers....and every drive / reader works with my Computer through my USB - C or A ports....except this still doesn't work! It will start transferring through the usb A then fail and freeze up my computer....OR it won't read at all through the usb-c. Hear connection sound, see nothing in Device manager. Straight RIP OFF! Piece of trash...and now its too late to return. WASTE OF $50! I am SOOOOOO disappointed and frustrated by this experience and it has wasted hours of my time troubleshooting. Please save yourself the energy and RUN from this Granly-box of bs.

Solid build and functionality - worth the $$ over a cheap plastic unit.

Loved it at first

I wanted a USB-C Card reader that would read all three of the cards I use and the UHS-II speeds. Unfortunately after the first one constantly spitting out the microsd (faulty spring) B&H sent me a new one and it was fine for a few weeks but then it started happening again. If you only need it for the SD and Cfast 2.0 then it's great, but as for the microSD I wouldn't buy this reader again.

Finally .....

Works like a charm with my iPad Pro. Thanks B&H for your recommendation.

I waited almost 4 months to get this card reader. It's perfect because these are the only 3 cards I own - Cfast, SD, MicroSD and it reads them very quickly too! Before I was using 2 different card readers and one took up two USB-c ports and the other one more. and the last one was the charger for my Macbook Pro. This reader frees up 2 ports and still works much faster than my previous SD/micro SD reader. Really hoping that it lasts.
