Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Overview

  • 1Description

Complementing the lens itself, the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H bundles the compact normal-length prime with a 49mm UV filter.

  • Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens

Delivering a "normal-length" 52.5mm equivalent on APS-C-format E-mount cameras, the E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens from Sony is a versatile and lightweight option that will fit a variety of shooting scenarios. It offers a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture for working in low-light and creating images with shallow depth of field. Equipped with one extra-low dispersion element and two aspherical elements, images will have an absolute minimum of aberrations. Also, it has built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for reducing camera shake and creating sharper images and uses an internal focus mechanism that enables fast, responsive focusing as close as 11.8". Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format cameras, this compact 35mm lens will provide a "normal" 52.5mm equivalent focal length.
A maximum aperture of f/1.8 offers excellent low-light imaging capabilities along with the ability to create images with a shallow depth of field.
One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Two aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 11.8", and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

  • Hoya 49mm NXT Plus UV Filter

The Hoya 49mm NXT Plus UV Filter is a general use, clear filter designed to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. Aside from the reduction of unwanted blue casts, no additional coloration or contrast is created, and adjustments to exposure are not required while using this filter. To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes five layers of anti-reflection coating. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. An additional hydrophobic coating results in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

This NXT Plus UV filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased clarity as well as color fidelity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight. It is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Such filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your front lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.

Absorbs UV light and reduces bluish cast of daylight.
Does not require adjustments to exposure while in use.
Multicoated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Creates no additional coloration or contrast.
Aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.
49mm front filter threads allow for use with other filters.
Top knurling to provide a more textured grip when mounting or removing it from a lens.

Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Reviews

E 35mm f/1.8 OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 210.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful lens I had no preconceptions of this lens. However, after taking only a very few photographs with this marvelous glass, I can say I've fallen...hard. Those who say it is too expensive: you're entitled to your opinion, even if you are wrong. This lens *feels* expensive, made of metal, or not (and frankly, the jury is still out on whether or not being metal is a good or a bad thing). The pictures don't lie. This lens is wonderful. AFAIK this lens is, for all intents and purposes, perfect.I will be using this lens for aerial video, on a radio controlled platform, with a Sony Nex system. I will also use this lens for my personal photography as my prime.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile lens for everyday use I bought my Sony a6000 without the kit lens and instead purchased this lens to go along. After much research, I found that this is a great upgrade from the kit lens for overall everyday use. So far I've taken a student's senior pictures, taken pictures of a vehicle for a for sale posting, and taken professional headshots. I found this lens to be exceptional in creating a pleasant, natural bokeh in portrait shots without compromising the sharpness of the subject. I have a backpacking trip coming up and I plan to take this lens along with me. I expect it to perform well. Overall I have no complaints with this lens and I think it's a great addition to any a6000's camera bag.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Be cautious Good, fairly sharp, well built, OK focus speed, but and this but is big. color fringing is an issue with this lens. I read reviews and overlooked that part of the reviews I guess. I took pictures of just plain white flowers up against it's own green foliage in bright sun and when later looked at the pictures I had to go outside and look at the flowers again to see if they were actually the way I saw them on my monitor. Wow! it was bad to say the least and getting rid of it was not easy and very time consuming. Other then that I'm happy with the lens. Just be aware. Seems to only happen wide open though f1.8 above 2.5 pretty clean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect lens for the Sony fs100 Ea50 Its a perfect fast normal lens on my Sony EA50 and FS100. Light weight and plastic but the video camera are heavy enough so thats a bonus for me... although for the price I figured it would be a little more solid feeling. I normally use a tripod but with the OOS its great being able to get some shoots on the shoulder that I may have missed setting up support. Absolutely razor sharp even at 1.8 (1920 x 1080) I would expect I would need to stop it down a bit with high resolution still images... I can say it is sharper than my Nikon 50mm 1.4 wide open and even stopped down to 1.8 (again in video) Great little lens so sharp and so tiny I really should have bought one sooner

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact, fast prime with great bokeh I love my NEX 5 and although the kit 18-55mm is adequate, it has significant short comings compared to a good prime lens. I have been getting by quiver of legacy primes and adapters (my favorite Hexanon 40mm 1.8) until this lens came out. The Zeiss 32mm/1.8 is too $$$$$. I demo'ed and was pleased with the Sigma 30mm/2.8 is sharp and a good value, but no image stabilization and not as fast (or having as good a build quality) as this new Sony lens. The lens is fairly sharp. Some reviews are critical of sharpness. I doubt that you will notice any deficiencies in real world shooting. I use this as my all purpose walk-around lens (and keep my Sony 16mm in my pocket).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Must have for the a6300 I use this lens for video work mostly. It has fast and accurate continuous autofocus which is extremely handy for gimbal work. The OSS is also a pretty good perk. At 52mm equivalent on the a6300 crop sensor it is a great focal length for most shots. At 1.8 it's very sharp and has good bokeh. This lens won't preform like the new G Master lenses (which should maybe go without saying), but if you're on a budget and can only get one lens this is the best bang for your buck. Delivers excellent shots and is a massive upgrade from the a6300 kit lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great walk-around/low-light lens for NEX I use this lens as an all-purpose walk-around lens. Its field of view in my NEX is about the same as a classic 50mm lens on bulky full-frame cameras. Thanks to a large max aperture and optical stabilization, this lens has been great for photography without flash in low light -- for example, outdoors in the evening or night, or indoors in softly lit areas like bars and restaurant rooms. Images are sharp at all apertures, although corners are a tiny bit soft in corners at f/1.8. Bokeh is beautiful. Autofocus works well for me except in really dark or tricky situations. The lens feels solid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best 35mm prime for APS-C E-mount The Sony 35mm 1.8 OSS is the best 35mm prime for the Sony E-mount cropped sensor cameras for several reasons. -First it has image stabilization which is a big plus for handheld lowlight photography -Second it supports the hybrid autofocus system on newer Sony NEX cameras and future Alpha mirrorless cameras. - Third, it is pretty sharp, has great bokeh, very little distortion. The lens is not perfect though. Lateral CA is higher than the 50mm 1.8 OSS, but lower than the sigma 35mm 2.8. The lens is also not as sharp as the 50mm 1.8 when wide open. To be more specific, the 35mm 1.8 at f2.8 is equal to the 50mm 1.8 at 1.8, in terms of sharpness. However the focal length of the 35mm on APS-C cameras is better suitable for everyday photography, compared to the 50mm 1.8 OSS (more suitable for special face only portraiture). Compared to the DT 35mm 1.8 for A-mount, the 35mm 1.8 OSS is marginally softer at 1.8, but has lower CA. Also the bokeh of the 35mm DT is slightly more smoother/buttery.

question

Is this lens compatible with the Sony Nex-5N or it needs an adapter? Thanks.
Asked by: Sergio A.
Yes, according to Sony literature, it is compatible with the Nex-5N, as that uses E-mount lenses. No adapter is needed. I use it with an Nex-6 and Sony a6000. I like it very much.

question

Can this be used with the Sony a57?
Asked by: Anonymous
No, the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens is not compatible with the Sony Alpha SLT-A57 DSLR Digital Camera. The Sony Alpha SLT-A57 DSLR Digital Camera has a Sony A-mount (Minolta MAXXUM lens mount), while the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS Alpha E-mount Prime Lens uses the newer, smaller Sony E-mount. There is no adapter that would allow you to connect the above lens onto the Sony SLT-A57 DSLR camera.

This depends on the camera you plan to use; however, the new lines of Sigma lenses are noted for their sharpness and image quality. You will also have a slightly faster lens with a f/1.4 aperture.
