    Ideal For Non-Professionals

I use the Emblaser to create precise parts for highly detailed scale models. I have no prior experience operating lasers. I chose the Emblaser 2 because it requires less maintenance and is lighter and more portable than commercial CO2 lasers and seemed ideal for the limited things I use it for. My comments reflect half a dozen sessions over about six weeks so unfortunately I can offer no information about durability or longevity. The laser's operation is simple enough that my first session produced some usable components for a model requiring many precision parts. I spent the first hour or so running tests to set cutting speeds and power levels for three kinds of art paper. Then I cut parts for a preliminary build to see whether subsequent final cuts would need any adjustment. The laser did only a fair job cutting one kind of paper so I eliminated it and produced the final sheets of part on the remaining two kinds of paper. The results were pretty stunning and almost beautiful. When, under magnification, I compare my own laser cut parts with those I previously have received from commercial laser cutters, mine look equal to or better than theirs. Please keep in mind, though, that the Emblaser is a relatively small, low power tool suitable for thin materials. Afinia's website includes a list of what you can cut or engrave and the maximum thickness. If you want to etch glass, metal, or other hard or thick materials the Emblaser would be the wrong tool. On the other hand, for an advanced hobbyist or a low volume business specializing in specific materials, I consider the Emblaser a very well designed, carefully thought out, attractive, and high quality tool with very straightforward software. That means you can use it to do a lot of things. The Emblaser is quiet, easy to set up, relatively low maintenance, and delivers clean, precise results. My experience suggests if the Emblaser 2 is appropriate for the materials you plan to cut or engrave, it earns a rating of outstanding.

    Enjoyed it Until it stopped

I enjoyed my Emblaser 2 (ordered Aug 2019), quick delivery, easy to set up and use, however this week it has just stopped engraving. I have been back and forth with the support team but as they're based in Australia while helpful, it's very difficult to get a timely response or any answers at all about what the next steps are. My small business has been using the Emblaser and as a result, sales have been impacted. I was initially very excited about the product however I wouldn't purchase again based on this experience and while I hope it gets resolved it's been 5 days of back and forth with no answers.

I have clear acrylic and i put masking tape on them before I cut, will that help to cut throuh1/8 thick Acrylic?
    Asked by: Cornell
The following is the reply from the manufacturer: "If you are referring to the coating that comes on acrylic - Yes, you can leave this on while cutting and it will help to minimize any surface burning or marking from soot, etc. as well as protect it from scratches. It is not a requirement to have the coating on, though you may notice some of the above mentioned marking, depending on the color - This is usually minimal. I would not recommend coating already bare acrylic unless you are noticing excessive marking and are unable to clean the surface post cutting."

Can this machine cut 3mm thick cast acrylic (plexiglass)?
    Asked by: Teo
The Emblaser 2 can cut 3mm cast acrylic, however it needs to be an opaque color and cannot be blue as it interferes with the wavelength of the laser. Translucent-tinted acrylic can be engraved, but not cut. Clear acrylic cannot be cut and needs treatment like talc powder to be engraved.

Does this cutter need a fume filtration system if only used in small studio?
    Asked by: Cynthia
ANY laser cutter, whether semiconductor, CO2, or fiber, must have a means to vent smoke and fumes to the outside, or failing that, use an activated charcoal filter to filter the exhaust. Also, you need to be very careful because some materials break down into poisonous gases when laser cut. This is why you should never cut PVC on a desktop machine.
