I bought this several years ago, and it has performed perfectly despite being banged around and neglected. I bought a carbon fiber tripod recently thinking the weight difference would matter -- it doesn't. I don't mind a somewhat heavier video tripod because after all, the mass makes it sturdier. I've used this in every imaginable way. I have bought a few other Viltrox products, and they've all been good. I come to this conclusion by noticing that I keep using these things year after year without thinking about it. That means they've lasted and they do their job -- all of this for a lower price!

Yes it is removable but the base of the tripod is an uncommon size (60mm). Most video heads are 75mm or 100mm. If you would like to swap the head you would need to find another 60mm video head.

Yes by removing the tie down you can remove the head from the tripod. The 60mm ball of the is not removable to make the Viltrox VT-01 head a flat head. It will only connect with 60mm ball mounts.
