Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines Overview

Available for download, Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machines, or VTM, is a plug-in that emulates the harmonic characteristics and dynamic responses of analog tape machines. This plug-in is designed to be used on tracks, submixes, and even stereo mixes, to lend your digital tracks a little analog mojo.

The controls are relatively simple and streamlined, including: input, output, bias selection, speed selection, tape width, and tape type. By default, the input and output stages are linked, so the harder you drive the input, the more the output knob automatically turns down, giving you a fatter, thicker, and more harmonically distorted sound without an obvious jump in level.

You can unlink these controls if you wish. You can also tweak other parameters in the settings panel including the ability to turn off or turn up the signal's noise floor, as this is often associated with tape machines. This software is compatible with Mac and Windows platforms and can operate in AU, VST, and AAX formats. iLok 2 or 3 is required run VTM.

Note:
iLok 2 or 3 is required to run these plug-ins. It is available separately.
Choose Machine Type and Tape Stock
VTM emulates 16-track 2-inch tape machines and a 1/2-inch stereo mastering deck. You can also choose between the two most popular tape formulations. Different formulations have different properties and headroom, and ultimately give you different sonic results.
Control Tape Speed
The VTM accurately emulates the behavior of both of the most common tape speeds, 15 and 30 ips (inches per second). Engineers who use tape sometimes choose which speed to use based upon the material they're recording, since the bass response can differ a great deal between the two speeds. You can further refine the bass response using the bass alignment slider in the Settings module.
