Would this improve the quality of my recordings over, say, and Imden (cheapo) lav mic? Not sure if some muffling / overmodulation is coming from my apps or the mic, and this Rode looks like it might help.
The frequency response and dynamic range of the SmartLav+ would improve the sound quality of your recordings, over inexpensive lav mics.

Yes, but you'll have to use your lightning converter that came with your phone. I have two Rode SmartLav's and I used mine with my iPhone 8, then my iPhone X and now my iPhone 12 Pro. I host an Amazon Prime travel show called "Places to Go" and it is the lav that you'll see clipped to my shirts except I also have the TRRS to TRS converter so that I can use it with non-phone recorders such as the Sony PCM-A10 used for most of the filming.

No as soon as you plug a microphone to your smartphone, the smartphones microphone turns off immediately.
