Nanlite Compac 200B Reviews

Soft Light, Noisy Fan

My company just bought one of these for our new video podcast studio. A softbox of this size gives a very nice look at 1 meter, but the fan is definitely audible at 1m, and the electronics also buzz and sound pretty cheap. I am skeptical of this unit's longevity but I've only had it for a week. Walking the unit back from the subject to get its fan noise out of the microphone works, but by the time the light is far enough from the speaker for the fan to fall silent, you're not getting the most out of your softbox. For us this was about three meters. With a quieter fan and some quieter electronics, an instrument of this design and proportion would be an excellent soft source. It provides a nice even wash of light.

These are compac indeed. Provide that giant softbox feel at a much thinner footprint.

Does the 200B have a fan that it audible at a distance of, say, 10 feet from the microphone in a quiet studio?
Asked by: Thomas
I went over to Nanlite website and asked them in chat. They said: HI the Compac 200B has a fan in it so it's not totally quiet. Depends on how close you have it to your subject. This was also reported by a B&H customer, previously. Description is incorrect.
