Built to deliver top-shelf sound in a desk-friendly and easy-to-use format for podcasters who need mix-minus functionality when taking calls and for singers and musicians, the third-generation Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4x4 USB audio/MIDI interface lets artists and content creators score pro-level tone with no learning curve, no matter where they go.

Equally capable for tracking vocals and instruments, the two improved Scarlett microphone preamps feature switchable phantom power for condenser mics, pads to prevent distortion on loud input signals, and a selectable-per-channel Air circuit, which adds clarity-enhancing brightness based on Focusrite's legendary ISA preamplifier.

The two XLR-1/4" combo inputs are outfitted with switches that allow them to accept signal directly from electric instruments such as guitar and bass, from line-level sources such as stereo mixer outputs, or from a hot feed from a drum machine. The rear panel sports two additional fixed-level 1/4" inputs to accommodate more line-level sources such as the outputs of external mic preamps.

Unlocking the ability to record at standard CD quality or high-fidelity resolutions, the 24-bit / 192 kHz AD/DA converters ensure that signals are captured and reproduced with detail and accuracy. With four balanced 1/4" line outputs, a 1/4" stereo headphone jack, and independent control of the headphone and speaker volume settings, the Scarlett 4i4 can simultaneously feed multiple monitoring systems or outboard effects processors.

The virtual loopback function on the Scarlett 4i4 empowers podcasters with an easy mix-minus setup for taking calls without the caller being distracted by a delayed audio return signal. Also, traditional 5-pin MIDI I/O is provided for seamless integration of MIDI equipment such as a keyboard or sound module. You can even utilize your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to wirelessly control the Scarlett 4i4.

With its bus powering for uninhibited portability, space-saving USB-C connection, and extensive software bundle including elementary versions of Ableton Live and Avid Pro Tools music production workstations, virtual instruments, plug-in effects, loops, and more, the Scarlett 4i4 gives you plenty of powerful tools to kick-start your inspiration. Just plug the Scarlett 4i4 into your Mac/Windows computer, fire up your preferred audio recording software, and let the creativity flow.

Portable and Bus Powered
Both compact and lightweight, the Scarlett 4i4 is rugged and ready to travel with you. Being bus powered via USB Type-C connectivity, it can be used in any room or even remote locations, no AC outlet required.
Pristine, High-Resolution Conversion
Thanks to its high-performance 24-bit / 192 kHz AD/DA converters, the Scarlett 4i4 is equipped to capture any source from vocals to acoustic and electric instruments clearly and accurately, so you never have to worry about the interface clouding your sound.
Scarlett Mic Preamps with Customizable Tone
The two upgraded third-generation Scarlett mic preamps feature switchable 48V phantom power to accommodate your favorite condenser mic, and a selectable-per-channel Air setting, which reproduces the Air effect of Focusrite's original ISA mic preamp to impart enhanced brightness and openness on your vocal recordings. Use the selectable input pads to prevent distortion when tracking high-level sources such as acoustic drums or electric guitars equipped with active pickups.
Instrument/Line Input Switches
The XLR-1/4" combo inputs on the Scarlett 4i4's front panel allow distortion-free recording of instruments such as electric guitar and bass, synthesizers, or drum machines, and there's no need for a DI box or amplifiers. At the press of a button, each 1/4" input can be used for line-level sources like a mixer's stereo output or the line outs from guitar and bass amps.
Rear-Panel Line Inputs
With two balanced 1/4" line inputs on the back of the Scarlett 4i4, you can patch in line-level sources such as external mic preamps, an outboard mixer, or synthesizer sound modules while leaving the front-panel inputs free for direct connection of mics, instruments, or other line-level sources.
Straightforward Controls and Level Indication
With the Scarlett 4i4's Easy Start tool and independent gain knobs with multicolor gain halo meters, you'll have no trouble getting set up and dialing in the perfect levels. Plus, there are no menus or complicated controls to slow you down.
Independent Headphone and Monitor Outputs
The four balanced 1/4" TRS monitor outputs on the rear panel enable hum-free connectivity with two pairs of balanced studio monitors or line-level inputs on headphone amps or external mixers. For critical listening through headphones, just plug your earphones or headphones into the front-panel 1/4" headphone jack. Separate knobs are provided for quick and independent adjustment of the monitor and headphone volumes.
Virtual Loopback for Mix-Minus and More
The Scarlett 4i4 features one pair of virtual loopback inputs, allowing you to capture a stereo feed of any combination of hardware input and software playback channels, making podcasting, live streaming, and sampling tasks much easier.
MIDI I/O
Spin the Scarlett 4i4 around and you'll find traditional 5-pin MIDI I/O ports, perfect for hooking up a MIDI keyboard controller, a synthesizer/workstation, or a sound module for MIDI recording, editing, and sequencing.
Powerful Software Control
Route your audio, cue mix, loopback, and monitor mixes from your Mac or Windows computer via the Focusrite Control desktop software. Tap into even more convenience by using the Focusrite Control iOS app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to remotely control your Scarlett when connected to Focusrite Control Desktop.

Focusrite 4i4 Reviews

No Hardware Detected after Warranty Period

Focusrite may have found a way to frustrate consumers by making their products in such a manner that they break down or do not get detected by their software right after the warranty period. My Focusrite 4i4 works well until I connect it to a computer and it will not be detected.

This 4i4 is the perfect audio interface for my new iMac. I decided to upgrade to a nice mic for my business zoom meetings and this does the trick. I went for the 4i4 instead of the two channel because I'm also a musician and this has worked very well when my wife and I have recorded a couple of songs. You cannot go wrong with Focusrite.

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4x4 is a great interface! Very easy to use with no set up, just plug it in and go. There is some set up with lower models however with the 4i4 4x4 upgrade the set up is already done. Its super clean sound and very well built and B&H always kills on pricing and shipping! Very happy with this purchase!

Works perfectly. It would be even better with built in compressor and reverb for direct monitoring.

Died after 8 months of use

Purchased for zoom meetings. I use this daily, several hours per day and the device finally died on me. Does not register as a USB device. I have tried it on three different computers, with different USB cables. I would have expected more longevity out of this item than 8 months. I would not recommend purchasing. I have contacted support, but they are slow and they have not been very helpful.

So I know the front has 2 XLR ports an the back has 2 MIDI. Would I be able to use 2 midi to XLR cables in the back to run 4 XLR microphones for a podcast?
Asked by: Gabriel
The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 4x4 USB Audio/MIDI Interface (3rd Generation) is capable of accepting a total of two microphone level signals and would not accept a microphone signal through the MIDI I/O connections. To use four microphones with this device, you would need an external mixer or similar preamp to receive and amplify the signals from mics 3 and 4 and then send them to the line inputs on the back of the 4i4.

You can connect the headphone out of the phone to the input of the interface but that will only allow you to record their side of the conversation. It will not record you nor will they hear your voice.

How is the phone connected to this module when podcasting?
Asked by: Mike
It would be helpful to have more information about your application and how the phone will be used, as well as what type of phone you will be connecting. For example, will you be using a smartphone to live stream or record a podcast or to take phone calls, or play music from a smartphone to accompany the podcast, or will you be using a landline to take phone calls? Please contact us by phone or through live chat on the website and we can help you to determine what will be needed for the application and how to set things up.

This seems really great but I can't figure out what cables I need in order to connect to my computer?
Asked by: audrey
The USB output connector on the 4i4 is USB Type-C (USB 2.0) and there is a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable included with the interface. If your computer has a USB Type-C port instead of USB Type-A, use an adapter such as the Pearstone USB 3.0 Type-C to USB Type-A Adapter (B&H # PEUSB33CA06) or Apple USB Type-C to USB Type-A Adapter (B&H # APMJ1M2AMA). If you prefer, you can use a USB Type-C cable such as the Pearstone USB 2.0 Type-C Charge & Sync Cable - 3', Black (B&H # PEUSB3CMCM3) instead of the included cable and an adapter.

Can I plug in a regular XLR cable?
Asked by: Kyle
Yes. The two inputs on the Scarlett 4i4 are "combo jacks" that accept standard XLR and 1/4" TRS. Phantom power is only supplied through XLR, so if you have a microphone that requires phantom power be sure to use an XLR cable to connect it.

Does it work standalone without bus power?

Does it work standalone without bus power?
Asked by: Jowy Joel
The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 USB Audio/MIDI Interface does require bus power. In order to use it as a standalone device, you would need to use a 5V DC USB power supply, which would be from a USB power adapter or a USB battery pack, like you would use to charge a smartphone. As long as there is 5V DC power going to the 4i4, it will work.
