Zoom L-20R Overview

The highly flexible Zoom LiveTrak L-20R is a 20-input digital mixer and multi-track recorder well suited for live performances, studio recording, band rehearsals, podcasts, and more. Eschewing the faders of the similar L-20 without sacrificing much else, the L-20R is both portable and rack-mountable, even supplying rack ears for mounting the mixer in your rack case. Also, the L-20R sports iPad control. The FOH engineer and up to six musicians can control their own discrete monitor mix over iPads, changing levels, EQ, channel effects, and more.

The mixer features 16 mono channels, each with combo mic/line XLR-1/4" inputs with high gain, low-noise microphone preamps, a one-knob compressor knob, and +48V phantom power. Channels 1-2 also offer Hi-Z inputs for connecting guitars and basses. Two stereo inputs offer dual 1/4" and RCA inputs. All channels work with the on-board channel strip, which provides a low-cut filter, a 3-band EQ, a pan control, and two send FX for sending signals to the 20 built-in high-quality effects processor.

The LiveTrak L-20R features balanced XLR main outputs, while the six monitor outputs utilize balanced TRS 1/4" connectors, each with the ability to set-up customized mixes. Simply connect your headphones or a stage monitor and adjust the levels to taste. Furthermore, by connecting remotely over iOS devices, musicians can adjust their own monitor mixes on stage.

The built-in SD recorder can simultaneously record every channel and the master fader stereo signal output for a total of 22 tracks at resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. Files can easily be copied to a computer and used in a DAW. The L-20R can also function as a 22-in/4-out USB audio interface, allowing you to record directly to your favorite software DAW or to iOS devices. The Zoom LiveTrak L-20R ships with a power cord a BTA-1 Bluetooth cable to connect your master iPad (other iPads connect to the master via Wi-Fi).

Zoom L-20R Reviews

Best digital mixer

By Scott
Rated 5 out of 5

16 XLR inputs, 6 individual monitor mixes and two effects engines. The ease of the app is great. If you can operate an analog mixer this is for you. I looked at other digital mixer apps and they were more difficult to operate. There were more features if you like a more technical mixer but for me Zoom is perfect. I was using a Mackie Profx16 mixer so this was the best transition to digital. I can't recommend this to first time digital mixer users enough. For the price and the features it's a big win. Hope this helps.

Not much complaint about this product. Wish that the control software is also compatible to Mac or PC and IPhone. iPad is great, but more option is always better. Bluetooth connectivity is great, but there’s a limit for the distance. Not good for a large location. For monitoring, it has to be from the console itself , not from IPad.

As advertised, but you must be aware of this ..

I have used the L-20R on four jobs it does what it specifies it does, as far as I can determine. However if you are using the to record you MUST have an iPad. I had assumed the iPad app was a convenience .. it is a necessity. You cannot arm any track for recording without the iPad. Also you cannot trim the input to any track from the app .. you have to trim using the knobs on the box. So the two must be accessible. I gave it a good rating because it does what it says it does.

Excellent small Mixer recorder with 20 inputs

This mixer/recorder is a bit unique in that it allows me to control a live performance and record that performance without an external DAW. That said, the small size comes in exchange for the required iPad. The preamps are exceptionally quiet (about 127db) and the capability to record all 20 tracks internally to an SD card to such a small recorder is very useful. The recordings are very natural and not edgy or grainy. You can record up to 20 independent channels with a resolution and sampling rate up to 24 bit by 96K. Connectivity is exclusively bluetooth, not wifi, so you will not be able to control sound from the back of the room. You can control your live concert as well as the recording from an iPad, on stage, which is great for a group without a dedicated sound person. Finally, if you are not an iPad person, you should likely look elsewhere.

You need an Ipad

This doesn't work very well on pc. It crashes with protools and ableton live. It works well as a recorder and the remote app on the iPad is cool. But if you need it as an interface, it needs more updates. I just can't wait for it to get better.

How many rack space L20R ? I only have 3 rack space left available.
Asked by: Thu
Based on the dimensions, you will need 4 rack spaces to accommodate the L-20R. The dimensions are 17.2 (W) × 6.2 (D) × 6.0" (H). Since the height is 6", that is equivalent to 3.4 rack spaces, which is why you would need to have 4 spaces for the L-20R to fit.

Close but not exactly. They are for 2 different purposes. The Zoom LiveTrak L-20R 20-Channel Digital Mixer-Recorder for Stage Use. Is as it says for stage use. It has the ability to do 6 Individual Monitor Mixes over iOS. Which you need for live work. The Zoom LIVETRAK L-20 is intended primarily for Podcasting.
