Sony UTX-M40 Overview

The Sony UTX-M40 is a wireless handheld microphone transmitter compatible with the URX-P40 camera-mount receiver. The rugged, all-metal design is comfortable for performers and presenters to hold and is well suited for tough operating conditions. The transmitter offers a 72 MHz bandwidth with 2772 selectable UHF frequencies. It provides up to 8 hours of operation on two AA batteries, with an adjustable 5/30mW RF power output and a transmission range up to 330'.


The UTX-M40 features a dynamic microphone capsule with a cardioid pickup pattern that focuses audio capture on the presenter in front of the mic while reducing unwanted background noise. The transmitter uses an interchangeable mic capsule design compatible with over 40 different capsules from various manufacturers.
The UTX-M40 is backward-compatible with Sony WL-800 and UWP Series systems.

High-Quality Sound with Digital Audio Processing
Unlike traditional analog wireless systems, the UWP-D supplements its proven analog UHF transmission technology with a proprietary digital audio processing. Transient sounds and consonants are reproduced with greater accuracy, resulting in clear, natural sound that’s intelligible and nuanced.

The handheld mic features a dynamic mic capsule with a directional cardioid polar pattern that helps to reject unwanted background sound, making it ideal in noisy environments such as trade-show floors or busy public areas.

Automatic NFC Sync Mode
Press and hold the NFC/Sync button on the receiver and it scans for the cleanest RF channel. Simply hold the transmitter next to the receiver; it automatically syncs up and you're good to go!

Unlike purely digital systems, the UTX-B40 allows you to send a single mic to multiple cameras for broadcast applications. Fast NFC communication makes setup for multiple receivers a breeze.

Auto-Gain Mode to Prevent Mic Distortion
Auto-Gain mode saves you the time and aggravation of setting and managing the input level on the transmitter. It uses a limiter to help prevent distortion, great when the loudness of the presenter’s voice is unknown.

The +15 dB Gain Volume-Boost mode boosts the mic gain by 15 dB to compensate for situations when the mic is not close enough to the presenter’s mouth and the audio level is insufficient.Manual input-level setting is also available.

High-Visibility OLED Display for Indoor/Outdoor Use
The unit features an easy-to-read OLED display. The quick response of the display lets you see the operating conditions clearly and accurately in real time, even in bright sunlight.
DSP Filter Removes Occupancy Sensors Artifacts
Two levels of DSP filtering help remove the artifacts caused by occupancy sensors used in modern "green" buildings to turn off lights when people leave a room.
Multiple Powering Options
Two AA batteries (alkaline or NiMH rechargeable type) power the transmitter for up to 8 hours.

The unit can also be powered through its USB port, allowing it to run for numerous hours on a USB power pack or indefinitely, if you have access to AC.

A battery count-up timer allows for accurate reading of battery running time to minute accuracy.

I have the Sennheiser md-46 Eng Mic that i use with utx-po3 transmitter that is old tech that beats the Sony UTX-M40 in audio quality, clarity, gain by at least 35% kind of disappointment cause I hoped that with my UWP URX-P41D it would out perform my old UTX -PO3 system

My occupation is to record live musical events, and of late, mostly live-streamed. I've used several brands and models of wireless microphones over the years, but purchased the Sony URX Dual Channel receiver kit for the ease at which it can be used with a variety of Sony cameras, including the A7 models and FS5 cinematic camera. A digital connection, without wires, is something to rejoice. I bought the UTX-M40 microphone almost as an afterthought, to accommodate vocal and narrative elements for salon concerts. It was easy to set up and works perfectly. I have used plug-on transmitters before, but the dedicated wireless mic is lighter and more compact, which makes it more comfortable for the talent to use.

I'm getting a SYNC ERROR when attempting to sync this (UTX-M40) to the URX-P41D receiver. Can't find any info online. Any advice?

You can find instructions on how to sync the Sony UTX-M40 Wireless Handheld Cardioid Microphone Transmitter and the Sony URX-P41D Dual-Channel Camera-Mount Wireless Receiver in the user manual. The Sony UTX-M40 Wireless Handheld Cardioid Microphone Transmitter (UC14: 470 to 542 MHz) works perfectly with the Sony URX-P03 (470.125-541.875) receiver. Both devices share the same frequency band (UC 14).

The UTX-M40 transmitter is a new model from Sony's UWP-D series while the UTX-M03 transmitter is from the older UWP series.

The Sony UTX-M40 Wireless Handheld Cardioid Microphone Transmitter (UC14: 470 to 542 MHz) is not compatible with the Sony UWP-D URX-P03 (638.125-697.875MHz). The frequency range of the transmitter and the receiver need to match.

What size mic head does this have. When I tap accessories for this mic the phone windscreens come in five different sizes so don't know which one to get

The microphone head on the Sony UTX-M40 Wireless Handheld Cardioid Microphone Transmitter has a diameter of 1.8" (45.7mm) and height of 3.1" (78.7mm). A windscreen for 1-5/8" (which is 1.625" as a decimal or 41.3mm) diameter should work best. The foam stretches and it will fit securely around the widest part of the microphone.

Can this mic be used with the UWP-D11 receivers? And more specifically, can they sync channels with the IR feature found on the side of the UWP D11 receiver pack?

Yes, this mic can be used with a receiver from the UWP-D11 system. There is an IR sensor on the bottom of the mic to allow for IR syncing. Please note, the transmitter frequency range must match that of the receiver.

Yes, the UTX-M transmitters, including the UTX-M40 wireless handheld transmitter, are compatible with mic capsules designed for Shure wireless transmitters. The RPW112 SM58 unit you asked about will work.
