SoundTools CTFX Overview

The CAT Tails FX from SoundTools allows four lines of balanced analog audio, AES/EBU, DMX, and Clear-Com signals to be run down a shielded etherCON/Cat 5/6/7 cable hundreds of feet away. The CAT Tail is a fully passive unit that supports 48V phantom power and can be used for input directly into analog or digital consoles. Each channel is isolated, which means channel 1 can receive a DMX signal while channel 2 is receiving balanced analog all down the same shielded Cat 5 cable.

Additionally, the CAT Tails extension system consists of a male XLR sender and a female XLR receiving unit (both sold separately). This allows you to send four XLR audio signals thru a Cat 5/6/7 cable hundreds of feet away and convert it back to the four XLR balanced analog audio, AES/EBU, DMX, and Clear-Com signals.

SoundTools CTFX Reviews

Less Obtrusive Than a Box

SoundTools CAT snakes have become a staple in my setup. The cable is thin, though somewhat stiff. I can piece 25' and 50' sections together as needed for various applications. I can fit about 200' of cable with terminations in a small bag, in less space than one 50', 8-channel sub-snake. I recently added a CAT Tails XLRF device, for use with a 4-ch Ambisonic microphone. The mic cable is short, and the CAT Tail is less obtrusive, and can be hung on a mic stand more easily than a box. The quality of construction is excellent - very rugged.

Small footprint, perfect tool

I'm a classical recording engineer and I recently had to fly across the country to record an album. I didn't have a lot of packing space as I was flying so I needed to keep a small footprint. The CAT tails were perfect for the application, I will be using them a lot in the future.
