Arturia KEYLAB 88 MKII Reviews

Solid controller

This thing is really sturdy and has very good keyboard feel. There are better-feeling keyoards but nowhere near this price range. The pads are surprisingly good as well. Connectivity is above expectations especially when paired to Analog Lab or the included presets.

Great hardware despite some initial problems.

Arrived in good condition, despite FedEx's best attempts to destroy it. The crate is very sturdy, but they managed to punch holes all the way through it. There were also some parts that were missing (a groundloop adapter, a USB cable, and magnetic panel overlays). I don't know if the parts were missing because of FedEx or Arturia, but Arturia and B&H quickly and graciously intervened to make sure I got the parts in a timely manner. Thanks to them both! Initial setup was problematic, as there is a steep learning curve, and I had problems communicating with MOTU DP, my DAW of choice. In short, I never was able to communicate properly with DP via MIDI, even though MIDI Monitor software was indicating the KL88MKII was transmitting MIDI data correctly. I managed to iron things out by using USB exclusively. Most of the quibbles people had with the MK1 seem to have been addressed. The noisy key bed is much quieter, and the keys have a nice, positive action. It still is a bit mushier on impact that I would like, but I suppose that is the price to pay for aftertouch (channel only). The performance pads generate poly aftertouch, a feature that was not to be found in any of the sales or promotional material. The DAW control works with DP via MCU or HUI configuration, but there are a few controls (like jog/shuttle) that I have yet to iron out. The encoders and faders are rubberized, and have a nice solid feel. I know that it's a trademark, but I absolutely despise the white finish. The smallest bump leaves a mark, and it will be dingy in no time. A black model is said to be in the works, but I couldn't find one in the continental US. There is also some wooden stand legs that can't be found either, but I prefer a solid Z stand anyway.  The promotional software package is a no brainer. The Piano V2 is awesome, a worthy contender to Pianoteq IMHO. The other software (Analog Lab 4, Vox Continental V2, Ableton Lite and Wurli V2) is a mixed bag running from great to unusable. Nonetheless, get it while you can.

Amazing Keyboard

My husband played a real piano & keyboards he was younger but hasn't played for years. He wanted to start again and debated between the KeyLab 88 MKII and a more traditional stand alone piano-type keyboard. He's so happy we went this route. He uses it with Logic Pro and feels the KeyLab offers the perfect amount of features without adding unnecessary things. He hasn't yet figured it all out, but it's great to sit down and play freely or to record using the software and create a song. The build is excellent, with a metal body and wood accents. The action of the key bed is excellent and is much closer to a real piano than non-weighted keys. The additional weight of the keys makes playing at different volume levels very easy. One complain that he had was the lack of documentation on how to set it up and integrate it with different DAWs, but Arturia's tech support is top notch and quickly replied with a long and detailed emailing showing step by step directions on how to set it up with Logic Pro. Plus, their website has a great FAQ section and detailed user manuals that cover how to use most of the keyboard's features. In addition to a great keyboard, the unit comes with some wonderful software. It includes Ableton Live Lite for those who don't already have a DAW. It also comes with Piano V/V2, which is a piano software add-on worth $249 by itself and Analog Lab, which is a collection of older (from the 80s I think), classic synthesizer sounds worth $199. So, the keyboard itself is a great item for the price, but when all the additional software is included, the KeyLab 88 MkII is a wonderful item.

Best in Class - High Quality Midi Controller

I was looking for a controller that had a real piano feel but also integrated out of the box w/ my DAW (Logic). It was between this and the M-Audio Hammer 88. This one looks and feels much higher quality and has a lot more onboard controls that allow me to do most of what I need in Logic right from the Arturia controller. It looks really great in the studio too!

Yes, that is possible, there is no template available, so you will have to assign each function from the DAW software and save the settings as a template.

the legs only fit the mkII 88 key not the 61 or 49 and also will not fit the first generation 88 key keylab. the legs are sold separately and are about 249 however I've seen the keyboard and legs together for 1099 if the price is 899 then it does not come with the legs I am just a consumer but I have chatted with arturia and they are having supply issues they hope to have fixed by the end of September to mid-october 2020 I absolutely love the last generation keylab and I'm waiting myself to get the new mkII version
