Cokin NUANCES Variable ND Filter (67mm, 1 to 8-Stop)
Key Features
  • 0.3 to 2.4 Optical Density
  • 16-Layer Multicoating
  • Schott B270 Glass Construction
  • Slim 9.5mm Aluminum Alloy Filter Ring
The 67mm NUANCES Variable ND Filter from Cokin is designed to mount onto lenses with 67mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1 to 8 stops. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with dots and includes a rotation lever to further enable fast and precise positioning of the front ring.

Cokin Nuances VND 1-8 Stops Overview

The 67mm NUANCES Variable ND Filter from Cokin is designed to mount onto lenses with 67mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 1 to 8 stops. Its density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity, and each glass surface features 16 layers of Cokin's EVERCLEAR 5 anti-reflection coating. These coatings are resistant to oil, dust, dirt, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are also hydrophobic, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Variable neutral density filter allows you to apply differing amounts of density from scene to scene.
Darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.
Provides an exposure reduction of 1 to 8 stops, allowing you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.
Offers increased flexibility to use specific ISO settings or ISO films under bright ambient light.
Provides increased exposure flexibility while using cinema or video cameras within a designated film frame rate.
Constructed from Schott B270 glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity.
16-layer Cokin EVERCLEAR 5 multi-coating prevents internal ghosting and reflections; is oil, dust, dirt, as well as scratch resistant; and provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Slim, 9.5mm thick aluminum alloy filter ring assembly helps to prevent vignetting while remaining lightweight.
Side lever allows the filter glass to be easily rotated.

This filter seems to work well, as far as it goes. It's touted as up to 8 stops of ND goodness; I've been able to document only 7 max. The 8 index markers on it? You'd assume each represented one stop, wouldn't you? Well, you'd be in for a disappointment; any correlation between the index marks and an actual whole-stop value is strictly coincidental. Do you use lens hoods to protect from lens flares and physical damage? You won't be using them when using this filter; you couldn't rotate the filter, assuming you could get your lens hood over the filter. On the plus side, the build quality is pretty good, and the filtering is even across the frame, but it's a little twitchy at the higher-density end of the range. For a filter to be used once in a while, that you don't want to sink a lot of money into, this one will do the trick.

This does what it should do without breaking the bank. I see no image degradation with my Leica lenses.

The following unit will adapt to some hoods and others not. We usually suggest using rubber threaded hood when in need. Sensei Wide-Angle Rubber Lens Hood (67mm) BH #SELHR2W67 • MFR #LHR2-W67 https://bhpho.to/3KwlHml

The Cokin 82mm NUANCES Variable ND Filter (1 to 8-Stop) won't be harmed by a few drops of water, but it's a good idea to avoid submerging it in water.
