Steiner Military 20x80 Overview

From Manufacturer

Designed for long-distance observations by law enforcement, military, and tactical professionals, and engineered to exacting military specifications for outstanding performance in challenging light and environmental conditions, the Steiner Optics 20x80 M2080 Military Binoculars combine multiple technologies and features to ensure clear and crisp views from first light through to twilight and everything in between.

Their performance starts with the combination of powerful magnification and over-sized objectives. At 80mm the objectives draw in the copious amounts of light required for seeing in low light, or in heavy fog and cloud cover; while the 20x power brings distant subjects in close for detailed observations. The optics are fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission through the light path, with a wide angle of view to provide sweeping views despite the high power, while helping to minimize the discomfort often associated with using optics on rough or rolling seas. All of these features, when coupled with the traditional Porro prism light path, present the user with an immersive observational experienced defined by bright and clear high-contrast views and accurate color rendition.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that allow the binoculars to withstand the rigors of the outdoors. These details begin with Steiner's Sport -Auto-Focusing System which allows the user to focus each eyepiece, just one time, and eliminates the need to refocus again regardless of how near or far the subject is - or if it is moving. The chassis is made of a lightweight and impact-resistant Makrolon polycarbonate material that is wrapped in an oil-, petroleum-, and chemical-resistant NBR synthetic rubber armor that offers improved grip security, especially in cold and wet weather. Their optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof to a depth of 16 feet, and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions. Because of the challenges posed by hand-holding large and powerful optics, Steiner includes a tripod adapter that clamps anywhere along the center stabilizer bar to steady the view and relieve arm fatigue.

Optical Performance
  • High 20x power greatly magnifies objects for detailed observation of distant objects
  • Large oversized 80mm objective lenses draw in copious amounts of light to ensure bright and clear images, while enhancing its low-light capabilities through the pre-dawn and dusk hours, and in heavy fog or cloud cover
  • Traditional Porro prism optical path produces a rich depth of field to more easily discern the relative distances between objects in the field of view
  • Floating prism mounting system helps to absorb impacts to avoid damage and maintain optical path collimation
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission, improve color rendition accuracy, enhance contrast, and improve clarity
  • Wide 66° apparent angle of view provides sweeping views to complement the high-power, and helps to minimize the disorientation often associated with using high-power optics on rough or rolling seas
  • 174' field of view at 1000 yd
Use and Handling
  • Individually-focusing eyepieces enable precise tack-sharp views
  • Fold-down rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • 56-74mm adjustable interpupillary distance

Sports-Auto-Focusing System:

  • Individual eyepiece focusing
  • Requires only one initial individual focus adjustment per user
  • Eliminates the need for refocusing for targets at ranges from 22 yards (20m) to infinity
  • Enables the tracking of fast targets without the need to refocus
  • 15mm eye relief
  • 4mm exit pupil

Construction Details
  • Built to exacting military standard specifications with tight tolerances
  • Lightweight and impact-resistant Makrolon polycarbonate chassis
  • Center stabilizer bar adds rigidity and ensures optical tubes remain parallel for clearer views, and provides a strong attachment point for the included tripod adapter
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof to a depth of 16' (5m), and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • Oil-, petroleum-, and chemical-resistant NBR synthetic rubber armor offers improved grip security, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Raised ridges on armor improves grip security and stability
  • Includes tripod adapter to improve image stability for long-term observations, eliminate arm fatigue, and limit vibrations
  • Tethered one-piece ocular rainguard and objective lens covers to protect the lenses without the chance of losing them; can be placed anywhere along the stabilizer bar for proper balance

Steiner Military 20x80 Reviews

Very disappointing.

Got these in the mail today and I'm returning them tomorrow. My fault for not realizing that being able to individually focus each eyepiece isn't an additional feature for fine focus...it's the ONLY way you can focus. It's like having two monoculars stuck together. Focus one side, then the other side and hope your subject doesn't move or change. Who thought this was a good design? Cumbersome to use and try as I might I could not achieve a sharp focus. I've never seen a pair of binoculars that didn't have a way to focus both sides at the same time and easily. Hold these monsters up to your face and then let go with one hand and try to focus using the little eyepiece...then do the other side. Ridiculous.

Adequate, but very limited eye relief

Overall, this Steiner 20x80 Military/Senator binocular is adequate for 20x use on terrestrial subjects. Optically it compares well to others in this class, with the exception of the narrow Field of View. The Steiner is lighter than most 20x, somewhat balanced, and so are reasonably easy to hand hold. But keep in mind they are 20x, so a support or brace of some kind is usually required. Now the bad points: I wear glasses / spectacles. The EYE RELIEF on this binocular is almost non-existent. Steiner claims 15mm, but that is to the ocular, which is deeply recessed (almost 15mm) in a hard plastic eye well. Measuring to the end of the rubber shield, the effective or working eye relief is almost 0. Steiner claims the rubber eye cup can be “rolled down” for increased eye relief, but I have not been able to do this. The only modification would be to remove the rubber eye cup, and risk damaging your glasses. Other binoculars in this 20x80 class have eye reliefs of between 16 and 18mm, and when their rubber eye cup is “rolled down” they give an effective or working eye relief of 13 to 16mm, which is adequate for spectacle use. Another bad point: The ocular adjustment on this Steiner 20x80 is very stiff, much stiffer than that found on every other binocular I own. So stiff, that I must remove the binocular from my eye and get a good grip on the adjuster to turn it. And that’s at indoor temperatures. Outside, at colder temps, it is almost impossible to turn. I plan to sell this binocular.

Close focus 196 feet, or 22 yards ? Can you remove the eye cups ?
Asked by: Lieve
While the minimum focus distance on the Steiner 20x80 M2080 Military Binoculars is 197 feet, the focus is still very sharp even at 22 yards/ 66 feet due to depth of focus. The eyecups are not intended to be removed.
