Key Features
- Powder B&W Film Developer
- Full Film Speed and Normal Contrast
- Fine Grain and Good Shadow Detail
- Suitable for Push Processing
Kodak Professional D-76 is a classic black and white film developer offering fine grain results along with full film speed, high shadow detail, and normal contrast. This powdered developer contains enough chemistry to make 1 gal of working solution, which can be used straight or diluted 1:1 for increased sharpness with slightly more graininess. The developer's ability to produce a long tonal scale with low fog also benefits its use for push processing.

The old D-76 produced a clear solution. When I mixed the new D-76 with water, it produced an opaque dark brown red solution. Is that normal?
Kodak told me not to use the brown powder/mixture and are sending me a new bag.

what replenisher do you use for d76?
Personally, none. It's not worth the bother under most circumstances, and you get more consistent, reliable performance with one-time use. I used the 1:1 dilution for the best results, even in the professional custom photo-finishing labs I designed and managed in the '80s.

can D-76 best used to develop paper? if so, how long does it take to develop?
Kodak D76 is not intended to develop paper. I would not recommend it. The developing times Kodak lists is only for film. It would require DIY to get the correct times for paper.

What is the capacity of a mixed gallon, not diluted 1:1, in terms of the number of rolls of 120 film?
The Kodak Professional D-76 Film Developer (To Make 1 gal) lasts for about 12 rolls of 120 film when undiluted. Most people use it 1:1 which should yield about 25 rolls or 120 film.

How many rolls can it develop in total?
How many rolls can it develop in total?
According to Steve Anchell’ Darkroom Cookbook (4th Ed.) Kodak says that one roll of 35 mm film is 80in2 and only takes 150mL of developer. However, Anchell suggests that far better results are found by using a minimum of 250mL of undiluted developer and even better results are found using 500mL. That being said 1 gallon of D-76 is 3.785L or 3785mL. Therefore 3785/500 = 7.6 rolls. If you are using 1:1 D76:H2O then about 16 rolls. Attempting to reuse D-76 is a bad idea.

Are you able to make 1 liter at a time or do you need to make the entire gallon all at once?
Have to make entire gallon all at once. Keep stock mix in separate container then just pour out only what you need for each film processing.
