Can this be used with xlr mic and trs earbuds to make phone calls?
Yes, it can be used with a smartphone, earbuds, and an XLR mic, but the mic needs to be a dynamic mic (which does not require any power to operate). If you are going to use a condenser mic, you may want to consider the IK Multimedia iRig Pre Microphone Interface (B&H # IKIRIGPRE) or similar interface that uses a battery to supply phantom power for the mic and also provides a headphone jack with a level control to monitor the audio.
