TASCAM MODEL 16 Overview

From Manufacturer

The highly flexible TASCAM Model 16 is a powerful, versatile, hybrid mixer/recorder/audio interface for both live and recording applications well suited for bands, studios, conferences, podcasts, houses of worship, and more. The full-featured, space-saving mixer offers 14 input channels including 10 HDDA microphone preamps with phantom power, two 1/4" Hi-Z jacks, eight balanced 1/4" mono line inputs, and two balanced 1/4" stereo line inputs. Additionally, the last stereo input can accept signals from a variety of sources including Bluetooth, USB, RCA, or a 3.5mm stereo mini jack.

There is single-knob compression available on the first eight channels, while three auxiliary sends provide signal routing to a dedicated monitor and to one of 16 onboard multi-FX presets. The main and sub stereo buses offer simple grouping as well as a selectable and assignable 4-band semi-parametric EQ for fine tuning your mix. The Model 16 offers 15 faders, with 60mm of throw for quick and immediate mixing moves. Each channel may be assigned to receive audio from the live inputs, the internal multitrack recorder, or the USB 2.0 audio interface, allowing for versatility in any environment. The integrated 16-track recorder takes its cue from TASCAM's Portastudio line, offering multitrack recording with the ability to record the 14 input channels plus the main mix to an SD card as well as multichannel playback for advanced live performance backing or mixing. What's more, the simple interface allows you to overdub and punch in/out without extensive menu diving. Additionally, the Model 16 features a built-in 16x14 USB 2.0 audio interface (up to 24-bit / 48 kHz resolution) for DAW-based recording and playback.

TASCAM MODEL 16 Reviews

Nice upgrade from Model 12

Used in a Church setting for house sound and streaming situation. Outgrew my Model 12, internally this is quite a lot different inside, as the Model12 is nearly all digital inside, whereas this is a lot more analog, and believe me this old sound guy still likes his analog. The one biggie on this console is that Tascam retained (or maybe upgraded) the Model16 functionality to provide master Main L/R output can be set to USB for streaming apps. When I bought the Tascam Model 12 a while back, it was one of the very few digital mixers that provided a means to set Main L/R to be able to send to a streaming app as opposed to having to run some DAW software in back of the streaming app to make this happen.

Very useful

I bought this unit recently for its ability to provide a live mix without computer latency but also record discrete tracks of the performance for a later mix. In this regard the mixer works very well as designed. I have not explored all the ins and outs, but I have a few initial reactions. Pros: very easy to use. Lots of options for routing audio for a variety of situations to serve various needs at once. Menu is straightforward and intuitive. Supplied owner's manual is enough to get you started. Cons: the mic preamps have a higher noise floor than some dedicated mic preamps I have, but I wouldn't call them noisy. Unless the room is very quiet, you won't notice the difference. Be careful with the media you pick - there may be some incompatible SD cards. There are some design choices that I wish were different: I wish the compressors did not affect the recorded tracks but instead came after the input like the EQ does. This renders the compressors useless if I don't want the tracks recorded with compression. I miss the In-Place Solo AFL feature for each channel on my Mackie mixers. Since I might be using it for livestreams, I wish it had master bus inserts, for instance to filter out a loud hum in the room for the webcast. These are small quibbles that relate more to my own mixing experience than to general standards. Knowing these limitations I can enjoy using the unit on a regular basis.
