Korg Nu:Tekt NTS-1 Overview

The KORG Nu:Tekt NTS-1 Digital Programmable Synthesizer Kit is an easy-to-build DIY instrument that packs a powerful punch in the palm of your hand. The kit includes a screwdriver and requires no soldering for assembly. There is a 3-character display, three knobs (Type, A, and B), and dedicated buttons for each section of the synth engine (OSC, Filter, EG, Mod, Delay, Reverb). The front of the NTS-1 includes a dedicated 3.5mm headphone output, which disables the onboard speaker.

The NTS-1 features a digital oscillator inspired by the MULTI engine found on KORG's acclaimed prologue and minilogue xd synthesizers. The main oscillator produces sawtooth, triangle, square, and VMP waveforms. Additionally, the engine can load custom oscillators created from KORG's logue-SDK, allowing for a near infinite amount of sonic possibilities. The multimode filter features a variety of selections including low-pass 2/4 pole, hi-pass 2/4 pole, bandpass 2/4 pole, and open, all with resonance. Further shape your sound with the envelope generator (EG) and three LFOs.

Three onboard effects units are also inspired by minilogue xd, which feature numerous reverbs, modulation effects, and delays that are available to blend and edit at will. A well-spec'd arpeggiator offers scales and numerous note orders for creating new and original ideas on the fly. The pattern length can be adjusted (from 1 to 24 steps), and when synced externally, the step duration can also be adjusted (16th to 64th notes).

The NTS-1 is USB bus powered and can also use a standard 5V USB power pack for portable applications. The NTS-1 includes a KORG software bundle, which features a variety of music software apps including Izotope's Ozone Elements, Skoove, an app to help you improve your keyboard playing skills, and Propellerhead's Reason Lite DAW software, as well as software synths from KORG and other brands. A USB cable is included along with everything you need to build the kit.

For $100, you can't get a more fun little synth. Great for external effects, too!

Full sound needs midi to shine

I wasn’t expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised by this little synth. Without the effects running I couldn’t get a decent sound out of it, but once you turn them on the sounds come to life and you can get a decent variety of feels out of it. I haven’t found a way to change the touch strip octave range so using midi is close to required if you want to get any bass range. I can’t get anything close to the sound of this thing from a volca. Def worth the $100 bucks.

Don’t be fooled by the price!

This kit comes together very quickly. This little synth kit from Korg packs quite a punch. Nasty sawtooth oscillator, with good filters & effects, plus an arpeggiator! The Korg has midi & other features I haven’t even touched yet. You can also get a nice drone out of this synth. RIP Florian S!

This little synth was so enjoyable to assemble. The video instructions made it easy to follow along. It has tons of features. Most of the buttons have dual features - tap for one feature, and hold for another. The synth sounds AMAZING. It also has an AUDIO IN, where you can use the unit as an effect processor. It has MOD (chorus, ensemble, phaser, flanger), DELAY and REVERB, all built in this little unit!

This thing is awesome. Don't be put off by the size or construction, it's an absolute powerhouse sound-wise. Don't come expecting polyphonic multi-filter madness, and definitely understand that the controls you see are the controls you get, but as an extra voice to add to my setup, it's perfect. Super tight bass sounds, both sub-heavy and grimy, wild leads with the addition of built-in chorus and delay, and smooth ambient sounds with the space and submarine reverb and longer attack. I haven't dug too deep into loading additional sound engines yet, but I'm excited by the possibilities! It's a great pairing with my OP-Z and Doepfer Dark Energy.

So, I'm not a musician but I love this Synthesizer so much. It's tiny, but so powerful. All by itself it's a very robust with amazing sounding Reverb and Delay. When paired with a Midi Keyboard you can truly unlock its full potential. This machine is great to carry around with you to be able to create music on the go.

Astonishing!

The sounds that come out of this little box are mind-blowing. And the versatility continues to amaze...
