It features a bright 7", 1920 x 1200 display with 2500 cd/m² brightness to help you frame and focus your shots and provides 12G-SDI and HDMI inputs for recording the video output from professional and consumer cameras. The monitor also features two balanced 3-pin mini-XLR inputs with 48V phantom power support for crisp audio recording. Blackmagic Raw recording is available for select Canon, FUJIFILM, Nikon, Panasonic, and SIGMA cameras.

The Video Assist records using dual high-speed UHS-II SD slots to SDHC/XC memory cards. You can also use the USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port to record to an external drive, as well as use it for configuring and upgrading the monitor. Video is recorded using industry-standard Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, or Proxy) and Avid DNxHD and DNxHR codecs.

USB Webcam Output with Firmware Update 3.3
In firmware version 3.3, Blackmagic has introduced USB webcam output, allowing for the Video Assist to send a full 1080p signal to your computer over USB using a streaming-friendly format. Also added is audio monitoring channel selection. This 7" version also gains XLR audio mapping to different channels and XLR external timecode.
Bright 7" Full HD Display
The display features a bright 7" 1920 x 1200 display with 2500 cd/m² brightness for evaluating your shots. On-screen controls allow you to vary the brightness and contrast depending on the shooting situation.
4K Support
Monitor and record DCI 4K, UHD 4K, 2K, and HD resolutions with 10-bit 4:2:2 HDR support. 3D LUTs are also supported
12G-SDI and HDMI Connections
Video and audio are captured using 12G-SDI and HDMI 1.4 inputs, allowing you to record from professional cameras and camcorders, as well as popular DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. The 12G-SDI BNC input even allows you to monitor Ultra HD footage. Loop-through outputs are provided so you can simultaneously display the live video or recorded clips on larger screens like 4K, 2K, or HD broadcast monitors or HDMI projectors while you monitor and record on the Video Assist. Up to eight channels of audio are embedded in the output and can also be monitored on headphones using the 3.5mm stereo jack.
Power Options
A universal power supply is included so you can use the Video Assist anywhere using the 12 VDC input, or run off two Sony L-series type batteries in the dual battery slots.
Audio Input
The monitor also features two balanced 3-pin mini-XLR inputs with 48V phantom power support for crisp audio recording.
Touchscreen Interface
The display provides intuitive capacitive touchscreen controls. Swipe gestures make it simple and quick to show or hide settings, such as capture resolution and format, as well as screen brightness and contrast. You'll have access to additional controls, recording status, histogram, waveform, vectorscope, battery status, and more. The controls have a semi-transparent overlay, so you can still be able to keep an eye on every part of your shots.
10-Bit 4:2:2 ProRes and DNxHD Recording
The Blackmagic Video Assist records your video at the 10-bit 4:2:2 quality. Files are recorded to dual high-speed UHS-II slots using SDXC/HC cards in Apple ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy) or DNxHD and DNxHR codecs. These are industry-standard formats, so you can start editing immediately without having to convert the files.

Blackmagic Design Video Assist 12G HDR Reviews

SDI Out is Broken...

This Monitor is a really great MONITOR, if it didn't have to live in it's own enclosure. The screen is nice and the device itself works fine... My major complaint is within just a few months (of not ever using the SDI out) the SDI out is absolutely dead. I've tried multiple cables & power and nothing. This is a MASSIVE issue for me, as we're trying to use a SDI loop for our Hollyland Wireless (which doesn't have loop) now making it impossible. Basically, I either need to spend $1,000+ on a new monitor or $3,600+ on a Teradek system that has loop + wireless. I am trying to get it replaced...BUT BM has really had a bad track record in fixing their products (which is a real shame, because I do love so much)

$800 could have been spent elsewhere

I was so excited to buy this item. built quality is beyond my expectations but I have an issue where I can never expose it in synch with the camera exposure. I have used it with Lumix S1H and Blackmagic pocket camera but I have to underexpose in camera to expose it correctly in the monitor. If I expose correctly in the camera the monitor is always overexposed. I have used the ninja v monitors before and never had the issue. I even tried with older Blackmagic cameras, same problem. so for me its was $800 that i could have used elsewhere.

Compatibility issues

I have used this monitor/recorder in the past with a Panasonic S1h and it worked fine. Recently, however, I connected the video assist to my Canon C300 MK III, and to my disappointment it does not work. The video assist reports 'no signal'. I've changed HDMI cables and have used Ultra High Speed cables all to no avail. Canon's list of compatible cameras lists the Canon C200 and the R5c, but conspicuously absent is the C300 MK III, and this despite the fact that their promo material claims that it will work with any HDMI camera.

Nice device but support by BMD is sorely lacking.

Overall, the build quality and functionality of this device is really nice. It's solid and I find the interface to be intuitive. That said, on one of my first outings feeding external audio to the XLR connectors, the audio was out of sync with the video. I reached out to BMD and, at their instruction, sent the unit to their CA service center to be looked at. It's been there for 4 weeks today and, speaking with them on the phone a few minutes ago, I learned that it hasn't even been looked at yet. I'm a tiny customer within their realm but, as a small visual creative, this was not an insignificant investment and is an important part of my kit. Any piece of gear is only as good as it's support and I'm so disappointed in BMD. I have their ATEM Mini Extreme ISO as well and it's a great piece of equipment, at least so far. Sadly, I'm shopping for a replacement for the 12G at this point because I need it and can't be confident that another BMD unit won't present the same issue.

Blackmagic Design Video Assist 7 12G-SDI/HDMI HDR Recording Monitor feels great and works great as a remote viewer for Autel Livedeck. I have not tested it in the field yet but it connects and looks to be effective for my purposes.

A BlackMagic Winner

Blackmagic delivers a solid monitor - recorder that lets my S1H equipped with Zeiss Glass shine in beautiful BRAW 12-bit colors. Images that swim deep in a cine Zeiss Look of color. Video Assist is solid quality, filled with different options that provide for my 'best quality' storage. Using Samsung's 2Tb T7 SSD is a pleasure of ease. The other data recording capabilities provide ease of use solutions for less demanding storage needs. My 7 model is so well made, it provides an edge of confidence, that outweighs any advantage that plastic monitors are hyped to provide. The BRIGHT BRIGHT SCREEN, easy menu system and focus aids add the icing on the cake, it's that something extra that makes a good thing even better.

100 percent Quality

SOLID quality. Nothing lacking in this Blackmagic Recording Monitor. A few reviews have brought up weight as a negative. The solid feel to this product conveys reliability and QUALITY to me. The recording - storage features are easy and natural to live with. The BRAW captures a full color spectrum from my S1H mated with ZEISS GLASS. The Zeiss image is swimming in beautiful colors that give you that Zeiss Look. The 12-bit color output is everything film art deserves.

You might consider the GlareGuard50. The magnetically attached Video Sunshade and Screen protector easily attaches to any 5" monitor. More details here: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1634476-REG/ocean_video_gg50_glareguard_5_0_video_hood.html?

I find that recording with this the audio is about 3-4 frames ahead of the video sync.Is there anyway to fix this? If not is there any unit I can purchase to fix this?
Asked by: Reave
If this is external audio the delay is common based on the source of the video. Many cameras have that much delay. Some users embed the audio with the video to get around this. There are audio delay devices that can be used for this purpose.

Can I record using UHS-I SD cards if I'm only recording 1080p ProRes video? Or do I still need UHS-II cards?
Asked by: Jaime
I've used a variety of UHS-1 cards (Mainly a 256gb Sandisk Extreme) and have had no issues in 1080p. Different cards will have different bitrates when they will start dropping frames. No way to figure it out but to test it.
