JBL 104BT Overview

Offered here in a stylish black matte finish, the JBL 1 Series 104-BT comprises a pair of monitors suitable for both consumer and critical audio referencing. They take the respected design of the One Series 104 and add Bluetooth 5.0 to the mix, so you can stream music from your favorite compatible media player straight to the speakers. Mixing engineers may also benefit from these desktop monitors, as they can now hear what Bluetooth transmission would do to their mixes.

These monitors employ a coaxial design to give you a smooth representation of the frequency spectrum, so that you have a more accurate picture of the sonic information coming your way. As such, these speakers are useful for home-recording studios, podcasters, video editors who pay attention to sound, and anyone looking for accurate, yet portable monitors.

A 4.5" low-frequency driver and a 0.75" high-frequency driver are situated in a coaxial design, while a 60W amplifier distributes 30W of Class-D power to each speaker. Set your monitoring level with the front-panel volume knob on the master speaker, and you'll find accurate sonic representation at any volume. The frequency response is 60 Hz to 20 kHz, but a low-frequency port ensures presence in the low registers to better judge bass content.

Inputs are made possible through balanced 1/4" jacks, a 3.5mm connection for auxiliary devices, or unbalanced RCA connections. A front-panel headphone jack on the master speaker mutes the speakers and outputs signal directly to your favorite pair of cans. Included with the monitors is a 6.6' monitor extension speaker wire, a 3.5mm-to-RCA audio cable (perfect for stereo receivers, for example), and a power cable.

JBL 104BT Reviews

Bluetooth Connection Is Poor

Bluetooth Connection requires resetting after each pause in use. This seems to be an unfortunate feature of these speakers. I do not recommend.

Great sound for the price!

I'm giving these four stars because I also own a pair of JBL 305p MkII monitors. The sound quality of these is excellent, but the MkII's is clearly better. That said, given the size of the 104s and the various methods of connectivity these monitors offer, they are well worth the price of admission. I needed a slightly smaller set of monitors for a new desk setup, and these fit the bill perfectly without sacrificing (too much) sound quality. What's missing, sound-wise, with these? The range isn't quite as robust. Basses aren't quite as deep; highs aren't quite as vibrant, but mid-range (to my ear) is excellent. If you can afford the MkIIs and have the space, go for those, but you will not be sacrificing much by going with the 104s. They are really excellent speakers overall. The other reason for four stars, however, is that these speakers have a built-in feature that you apparently cannot disable, and that is that they will go into low-power mode if they don't detect a certain line voltage. I've found this feature to be *really* annoying. Sometimes, I have music on while I'm working, and I want it at a low volume. However, the speakers are not detecting enough voltage and are dropping into sleep mode. It's not a huge deal, as I can turn the volume up slightly; it's just a matter of figuring out where the magic line is when I want background music on while I'm working without blowing my ears off at the same time. In future version of these, I'd recommend that the minimum voltage is dropped (I think it's currently 3.something volts) or (even better) provide a way to enable/disable the feature.

Do these speakers sound good at low volume levels, or do they need to be turned up to start sounding good?
Asked by: Ernest
Yes, the JBL 1 Series 104-BT Compact Powered Desktop Reference Monitors with Bluetooth do sound good at low volume. They serve their purpose well as basic reference monitors with a flat frequency response so you will have an accurate representation of the sound for mixing and editing.

I just got these and I love them. They'd work better with my particular setup if they had longer speaker wire connecting them. Any recommendations?
