Celestron 94155-A Overview

Updated to be compatible with more of their optical tube assemblies (OTAs), Celestron's Focus Motor v2 eliminates vibrations and helps you achieve finer and more precise focusing on select SCT (Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope), EdgeHD, RASA (Rowe-Ackermann Schmidt Astrograph), or 7" Mak (Maksutov-Cassegrain) models.

Once installed on the OTA, the unit plugs into the auxiliary port on your Celestron mount, which not only provides the power, but allows it to be controlled by the mount's NexStar+ or StarSense computer hand controller running the current firmware version. If your mount isn't compatible with the Focus Motor, you can opt to control it from a Windows computer with the addition of an optional USB cable or 12 VDC power adapter.

Helpful for visual observation and indispensable for astrophotography, a precise DC servo motor delivers three speeds—low 8°/sec, medium 32°/sec, high 128°/sec—without vibration or noise. Using an electric focuser eliminates the need to touch knobs, which cause vibration, and allows a level of precision that hand focusing is usually unable to achieve.

You can use many types of astronomy telescope control software that have focuser control by using the Celestron Unified ASCOM mount driver that is available as a free download. Celestron also offers a free download for Windows that will enable direct control of the focus motor without the need for an ASCOM driver.

Compatible Optical Tubes
  • All 6-14" Celestron Schmidt-Cassegrains (SCTs) produced after 2006 (exception: 5" SCT or models produced before 2006)
  • All Edge HD telescopes, including the 9.25" model
  • RASA 8", RASA 36cm
  • 7" Maksutov-Cassegrain (Mak) telescopes
  • Can be used with the 11" RASA, but requires the optional Focuser Retrofit Kit

For 6" SCTs ONLY, the Off-Axis Guider (#93648) cannot be used when the focus motor is installed due to mechanical interference

It works as described and is easy to install but the auto focus on various apps is at best mediocre. It takes some getting used to to focus when you’re used to the manual. However, it is an advantage, when looking at deep sky objects. In retrospect for the money, I would rather have a cheap ZWO camera. It’s used on a 8SE Celestron I CST.

Love It

Yes, it is. I´ve checked in Celestron deweb. Besides that you can find some videos in YouTube regarding Celestron motor focus in Nexstar telescopes. And in my opinion it´s really worth it. Regards.

Specifically, what was the improvement from the first version of this product (Celestron 94155)? I have a Celestron CGX1100 scope and the first version of the focus motor and am wondering if it would be worth the upgrade.

This is the only updated information B&H has received from Celestron: https://www.celestron.com/products/focus-motor. Appears to be a stronger motor for heaver OTA's

The 94155-A Focus Motor has 1000 steps per revolution, so each step is 0.36 degrees and moves the Primary mirror forward or back by 750nm (0.75mm pitch on all compatible SCT and RASA focusing threaded rods)
