Neumann BCM 705 Dynamic Broadcast Microphone
The BCM 705 Dynamic Broadcast Microphone from Neumann is a professional, dynamic broadcast microphone. The BCM 705's housing and head grille are identical to those of the BCM 104. The dynamic capsule features a hypercardioid directional characteristic, specifically designed for speech reproduction at close range. Multi-level isolation from structure-borne noise and an elastic mount ensure operation free of interference, even in a lively studio environment. The microphone head grille twists off easily for quick cleaning.
The frequency response has a light treble boost, in the region from 2 kHz to 9 kHz, aiding the speech intelligibility. The bass frequency response is designed to compensate for the overemphasis of the bass caused by the proximity effect.

A pop screen not only prevents the occurrence of plosive pop noises in vocal recordings, but also efficiently prevents unwanted particles from settling on the diaphragm.

The preferred mode of operation is to suspend the BCM 705 from a standard studio boom arm. A thread adapter to fit different connector threads is included. In order to provide protection from structure-borne noise, both the capsule and the microphone in its mount are elastically suspended.
This microphone is part of the B&H Virtual Mic Locker, an online tool to help our valued customers determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice over work. Each microphone was recorded using a Grace Design M103 preamp into a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface.

Neumann WS47 Windscreen (Black)

Neumann's WS47 Windscreen for D-01 Microphone  (Black) is an open-cell polyurethane foam which attenuates close-range sounds, wind, and fast movements of the microphone boom.

The wind noise attenuation was measured without electrical filtering in a turbulent air stream traveling at 20 km/h, generated by a noiseless wind machine.

Designed to Fit
The WS47 windscreen is specifically designed to fit D-01 microphones made by Neumann.
Attenuation
Wind noise attenuation is measured at 22 dB, while attenuation at 15 kHz is 3 dB.
Black

Can this mic be mounted inside the ISOVOX 2 portable iso booth, or does it have to be mounted on a boom?
Asked by: Yarrow
Yes, this mic will fit, but it may sit a little bit high.

Does this mic require an inline mic amp, like the Shure SM7B tends to?
Asked by: TJ
It depends on the built-in mic preamp on the device that the mic is connecting to. Some mixers and amplifiers do supply a sufficient amount of power to achieve the desired level for a SM7B or BMC 705. So an inline mic booster such as the Cloudlifter CL-1 (B&H # CLCL1) may not be necessary though many users do like having the additional headroom it can provide.

How good is this mic for recording vocals - when I need a dynamic mic, that also hangs down from a boom arm?
Asked by: TJ
Although it was originally designed for speech applications, the BCM 705 can certainly be used for recording vocals with excellent results.

Between the BMC 705 and the SM7B, which do you think picks up less room noise? I will be recording only vocals in an area/small space without soundproofing. I like both these mics, for different reasons. Or do you have a better suggestion than either of these? I'm connecting to a Blue Compass boom. Thanks.
Asked by: TJ
I have both, and an untreated room. I do use a noise gate on both, but I think the Neumann has the edge in noise rejection. Plus--it's just a cool looking mouth. If you tend to eat the mic like I do, go with the Neumann.

HI, I have seen 2 different BCM 705 designs. Both have the same capsule. One has the capsule suspended using elastic. The other the capsule is bolted down and there is a metal pop filter in front of it. The second one is definitely not the BCM 104. Have you sceen any of these?
Asked by: Antonio
We are unaware of the two different capsule designs you mention for the Neumann BCM 705 Dynamic Broadcast Microphone. Please email [email protected] if you would like to discuss further.
