PDMOVIE Remote Air 4 Overview

The Remote Air 4 Single-Channel Lens Control System from PDMOVIE features a wireless handheld controller and a rod-mount, German-made, brushless lens motor. The motor can be mounted on a single 19mm rod using an integrated rod mount, or on a 15mm rod via an included 19-to-15mm bushing. This 4th generation of PDMOVIE's Remote Air system has a slimmer and lighter motor design with twice the torque, and, at 8192 DPI, four times the drive resolution than in the previous version.

The hand controller works from up to 328' away over a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection and via full-duplex transmission. Anti-interference and error correction functions are built into the system to keep the controller and motor communicating properly. The motor also features built-in Bluetooth for use with an optional PDMOVIE Bluetooth controller.

The motor has a 0.8 MOD drive gear. The Remote Air 4 system can control up to three motors by itself, allowing for clean communication in an FIZ setup if you incorporate additional motors at a later time. (PDMOVIE offers PD-RX motors as well as PD-MX slave motors.) However, it can also be adapted for 3D shooting by assigning multiple motors to the same channel. The motor offers a total of 19 channels to allow compensating for interference where applicable.

To support right- and left-handed users, the rotational direction of the controller's handwheel can be changed, allowing for comfort and accuracy. The controller's integrated battery provides a runtime of up to 30 hours. The battery is rechargeable via a 4-pin connector supporting 100-240V input. A USB to 4-pin cable is included for use with standard USB chargers.

The motor is designed to be powered using an included D-Tap to 6-pin power cable. In this 4th-generation version, the motor supports a much more expanded 7-20V power input range. This means that you can connect it even to 7.2V DV batteries that have a D-Tap port. Such DV batteries are already available on the market.

The motor has an OLED screen on the side where it's easier to view. The display confirms the signal channel and signal strength as well as the battery information of the controller. Several functions can be controlled with just one button on the bottom of the motor. You can calibrate your lens manually or automatically, adjust the control speed between slow, medium, and fast, change the motor direction, cancel the calibration, and recover the calibration. The Remote Air 4 system's upgraded motor calibration easily works on lenses with and without hard stops.

PDMOVIE Remote Air 4 Reviews

Perfect setup

This wireless focus kit has worked amazingly well. I didn't know what to expect as this was my first purchase from this brand. But since then it's exceeded my expectations. It's the perfect combination to use on a gimbal cage or shoulder rig handle. Easy to connect and switch between setups.

Concept is amazing. Torque is amazing.

This is a great little product, especially for the price. I love the thumb follow focus to put on a tripod handle or gimbal. Very compact and still has enough torque for larger lenses. My main critique is that the morse code button programming should have the same commands from the motor to the remotes. The only other con I can think of is the internal batteries that cannot be swapped out. When the battery goes out, do you throw the remote into the garbage? BTW-- they need an Android app in addition to their iOS app. I gave it 5 stars, cause I think its a great product and it has amazing potential to be the perfect follow focus.

I had some initial problems but the PDMOVIE company sent a replacement unit all the way to Iceland. Great service. Everything works as it should. I especially like the thumb controller for a one man operation. Bigger controller is accurate and easy to work with.

I used the new Remote Air this weekend for a music video shoot with some cine primes with the A7S II and it literally worked perfectly without any issues at all. When I was using it with the Ronin, I used the thumb controller instead of using the bigger controller. Switching between the two controllers was really easy. All I had to do was turn off the bigger controller and turn on the thumb controller and it automatically synced. I was also able to try out using the bigger controller a few weeks ago while shooting between two different cars. The focus puller was in a separate vehicle with a wireless monitor and I was in the back of a pickup as a camera op. The focus pullers vehicle was in front of ours and was at least 30-50 feet away from me. We wanted to do a focus pull of the motorcycle driver coming toward the camera and the shot turned out exactly how we wanted it to. Now that I have one of these, Im trying to figure out what other types of crazy shots we can do with it.

Extremely low latency

This system has had a huge upgrade from the previous generation in terms of latency. When using the hand controller to pull focus, I dont even notice any latency at all. It litterally feels like its 1 to 1. The thumb controller has a little higher latency, but still fast enough to barely notice it. I usually use the thumb controller on the top handle of my cage or tripod handle.

The motor stopped working in the middle of a shoot. We bought this 4 weeks ago and have used it for 15 days of shooting.
