Miops MIOPS-SP Overview

The Splash Water Drop Kit from MIOPS is a clever product built around the Splash regulator that allows you to capture what is normally a difficult "frozen" water drop shot. The kit includes the MIOPS Splash, a Splash Holder to attach to a tripod, light stand, or similar support, a PC flash sync cable, and a USB power cable. The system allows the user to set the size of the drops as well as the interval between drops.

The MIOPS Splash allows you to easily dispense customizable drops of water while syncing their release with your flash or camera. It features wireless operation thanks to Bluetooth connectivity, with a dedicated mobile app that allows you to adjust settings and trigger shots directly from your iOS or Android smartphone. The unit can dispense a single drop for a simpler shot or two drops in quick succession for a splashing effect. Drop size can be adjusted by controlling the duration of the valve, and you can change the delay for triggering the camera or flash to get the perfect shot; when set to two drops, you can also control the delay between each drop for improved results.

The MIOPS Splash offers two jacks for synchronizing with your equipment, a 3.5mm slot for a flash cable and a 2.5mm slot for a camera cable. A flash cable is provided with the product, which is 3.3' long and connects to any speedlight with a PC sync slot. MIOPS Splash can have its firmware updated via the app and runs on USB via the included micro-USB power cable.

This is a fun little gadget but takes a little bit of time and patience to get good results.

This thing is so bad, I was tempted to say nasty things. I have tried repeatedly to get this to work. It will not only not trip my camera shutter, but the hardware is so flimsy and shaky, that it is impossible to use in a professional manner. Look elsewhere!

    Doesn’t Work

This has been the most frustrating experience. This product is impossible to program. I have taken hundreds of photos using every possible setting and scenario and cannot produce usable and reproducible results. I even returned the first on, thinking it was defective, but if anything, this one is worse. Iwill never even attempt to use it again. So disappointed!

    Good so far...

I've only had it for a week or so, but so far, it works as it should. Getting it dialed in is REALLY difficult (for me at least). Just an FYI - get a 2.5mm aux extension. The supplied cord simply isn't long enough. Also, I'm only using one speed light and it's proving to not be enough light. I think I'll order a second one.

The water tube does not seal to the base, so the unit is frequently leaking random extra drips. Also, the flimsy and unstable mounting is too easy to dislodge resulting in a big, messy dump of water. If they fixed the leak issue and had a more stable mounting system, this could be a real winner, but until then, I'm going with the Splash Art system.

    Very consistent when used properly

The kit delivers excellent results, but the full user manual is not in the box. You absolutely need that manual, and the correct camera/flash gear, to get the spectacular images you’re hoping for. The kit offers very precise control of the photographic process once you learn how to use it. Only 4 stars, because the water tube is not sealed against leaks.

Frustrating until you dial it in (My steps are included)

I got this mostly to play around with, having seen a number of reviews where people blast the product as garbage and claiming it doesn't work. Having watched a ton of videos on water drop photography, my first thought was to take the approach of thickening the water to try to get better drops. My first advice is don't do that, at least not initially. I couldn't get it to work reliably with xanthan gum in the water. HERE IS THE TRICK: Use regular water (add food coloring or milk if you want) Set up the device with default settings, hook it up to your camera Pull out your phone and record in slow motion as you hit the button in the app. This is the real key. You'll see each drop falling, then you'll see the flash firing and you can adjust size and timing from there. When I did the slow motion recording, I was able to dial it in firing less than 8 times on 2 separate occasions. If I were to pick one thing to complain about, it would be the friction arm that holds it in place. It isn't very grippy and droops a bit. You can get it to hold pretty well, but it is a bit frustrating and I'll probably upgrade to a better one soon.

    It's ok but unreliable.

I've used this setup for about 9 to 10 hours. I've tried it with water and water based solutions. I started with the default setup as recommended by Miops. Drops are inconsistent regardless of size Worse with two drops and impossible with three. I've gone back to using my older Pluto setup. I suspect the plastic drip nozzle may be part of the problem. Oh yes...the included micro USB cable failed out of the box.

Hi, I have 2 questions, I have the Siros S 800. What kind of cable should I buy to connect from Siros S to Miops? Which cable should I buy to connect from Miops to 5d mark 4?
    Asked by: Ahmad
It doesn't work, the Miops have 2 jack slots the 2.5 and 3.5, and the Broncolor has a jack 3.5, so it seems I have to connect the 3.5 jack from Miops to 3.5 Jack Broncolor, is that right? because there is no way to connect PC Sync Cable from either Broncolor or Miops, only with my Camera.
