Load Capacity
The generous 55 lb load capacity of the RTH-1050 enables the smooth positioning of almost any type of camera, ranging from simple compact models up to heavy camera-plus-lens combinations, with stable and secure results.
Tension Control
The locking knob includes an integrated tension dial that sets the minimum amount of friction on the ball. This ensures there's friction, even when the main locking knob is disengaged. This feature assures control of your camera and lens when you need to quickly unlock and reposition the ball head.
Arca-Type Compatible Quick Release System
The Arca-type compatible quick release plate allows the camera and lens set to be quickly mounted. It incorporates a bubble level for precise horizontal alignment, and a +/- 25mm scale for precise quick release plate positioning. The included AQR-60 quick release plate has a D-ring 1/4"-20" mounting screw, rubber traction strips to prevent camera rotation, and security pins to prevent it from accidentally releasing from the mounting platform while being positioned.
Panoramic Base
The panning base operates independently from the main tension knob and features its own locking knob. A highly visible precision scale adds simplicity to panoramic imaging and creating repeatable results.
Aircraft-Grade Aluminum
For exceptional strength and stability, the RTH-1050 head is constructed with aircraft-grade aluminum that can stand up to demanding use and travel and perform at the highest level. All of the control knobs are cross-hatch knurled for easy gripping.
Solid Brass-Reinforced Socket
The base of the RTH-1050 ball head features an industry-standard 3/8"-16 mounting socket machined from corrosion-resistant brass, making it compatible with virtually any tripod leg set. The socket is made from reinforced brass to resist wear for long life and reliable, secure tightening.
90° Notch
Quickly change the camera orientation from landscape to portrait using the 90° notch.

This is a great ball head for the price. The build quality from Robus is great, and is better than expected for the price compared to other large brand names. It's worked well for me so far, and have no complaints.

I bought this to replace an old Arca-Swiss head. It got its baptism of fire on a recent trip to Alaska, using 200-500mm and 600mm lenses with a Wimberley Sidekick. It's very solid, but the traverse is a little jerky with the big guns. I hope that will work itself out with use.

Does everything I need.

This head is easy to use. I can switch orientation from portrait to landscape easily, Turn want knob to allow the camera to be moved, change the orientation, and then turn the knob to tighten the camera in place. It comes with a nice carrying bag.

I needed a new ball head for my new Robus RC-8860 tripod. I wanted something reliable, able to hold at lest 20 pounds and without limitations. Most heads I have used in the past all had something I felt could have been better or missing. Everything about the RTH-1050 hits home for me. It has a nice large base that makes it easy to use and provides great support. The large nicely finished ball looks and works as well as any premium head I have ever used. The controls are a nice size with very good grip to use in any conditions with ease. I love the integrated tension control in the main knob. It provides great control WITHOUT HAVING AN EXTRA CONFUSING KNOB. I like how well the tension is controlled with the tension control while the main outside knob will lock down the ball in less than a quarter turn. The 90 degree portrait orientation notch is very accurate. And I was concerned about how tight the pan tension was when I first tried it. But after I spent some time spinning the head , it got better. Then after I put a camera and lens on it felt free but well dampened. There isn't anything I can find about this head that I can't give high marks. I find it hilarious that some take points off because of the bag that comes with this head. While it isn't a nice leather case, it isn't bad. And in truth, most real photographers will keep it in a Pelican case when not mounted on a tripod. And all a nicer case or bag would do is to add unnecessary cost. Where do you want your money spent, on better kit purchased or getting accessories you may never use!

Solid As A rock

Solid and Sturdy with ease of control and use. Let me preface this by saying that last year I was in need of a new ballhead for my Robus Vantage Series 3 Tripod. At the time Robus did not make ballheads. I purchased a RRS BH55 and fell in love with it until one night while trying to shoot a vertical panorama, I realized the the ballhead was not tall enough to allow my camera to spin all the way around freely. I ended up having to buy a leveling base just to add some height so that I could do my vertical panoramas. At the time I wasn't too upset about it. A few weeks ago I was contacted by Robus and they asked me if I would like to try out the new Robus RTH-1050 Triple action Ball Head. I jumped right on that. I have been using their tripods for over a year now so I could only imagine how well built their ball heads must be. After receiving the RTH-1050 the first thing I did was put the camera in position and tried the vertical pano...it worked perfect... Even though this ball head comes with a knob instead of a lever, it is tall enough that it works flawlessly. I was so happy. I went up on top of one of the mountains here in Colorado and tested it out for sure... it worked perfectly... So while that may not be something everyone is looking for in a ball head, it's sure nice to have. Let's talk about what I really love about this. It's solid. It's built very well and I don't see it wearing out anytime soon. I shoot almost 270 days a year in extreme heat and super cold temps. I have not had it in super cold temps yet so that will be something I report back on later this fall and winter. The motion is super smooth, I love the tension control which allows me to tighten it just enough so that the camera doesn't move and allows me to move the camera (think of doing a pano) without always having to tighten and un-tighten each time. I have used my D850 with both my Sigma 85mm 1.4 and Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 (both good sized lenses) and have not had any issues at all. I feel 100% comfortable that when I tighten my gear on this Ball Head that it will be secure and give me incredibly sharp images. It comes with a panorama base which is always nice if you like doing panos. The knob for the pano base is very easy to grip, loosen and tighten. I love the rough texture of the knobs and feel this will be a huge benefit this winter when I am using gloves. Even if my gloves get wet I still feel that the control knobs will be easy to grip and use. if I had to come up with something I am not too fond of with this Ball Head I would say it's the Knob for the camera plate.. It's not a huge issue at all but I will say that I got used to the lever on my previous ball head. I am not sure if that is something Robus will address in their next model or not but if they do I'll be getting one. Because the knobs are so well textured and easy to use it's a very minor thing in my opinion. If you are a person who loves value like myself, this is the Ball Head to get, at almost $100 less than the BH55 and it actually does more and is better designed. I like that the tension control is on the main knob itself and not a separate knob and I also love that I can take vertical panos without needing extra equipment. I did receive this product in exchange for my honest review I also would never review or endorse a product I don't use daily. If I did not like this product or plan to use it, I would have simply packed it back up and shipped it back. If anyone has any questions about this, please send me a message. You will not be disappointed with this purchase. I wanted to show you a video of the camera moving all the way around but it wont let me upload videos. Hopefully you can see from the pictures that there is a perfect amount of space for the full rotation. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review]

Why is this ball head not recommended for use on a monopod?
Asked by: Michael
Typically ball heads offer too much motion when unlocked, which can be hard to handle when using a monopod. With only two hands to grip onto the camera or lens; monopod itself; or the head/tension release knob, using a ballhead could make it difficult to secure the lens in the correct position/orientation. Alternatively, using a monopod head limits the motion to a single axis via the primary tension knob, making it easier to adjust for tilt while not giving you any hassle with pan or roll.

Yes, it will mount to a 3/8"-16 screw on a monopod without issue, although it's typically not recommended.
