Freewell All-Day VND Overview

This Freewell 82mm All-Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 and 1.8 to 2.7 Filter Kit (2 to 5 and 6 to 9-Stop) includes a Freewell 82mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter and a Freewell 82mm Bright Day Variable Neutral Density 1.8 to 2.7 Filter. Freewell 82mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter (2 to 5-Stop)

The Freewell 82mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter is designed to mount onto lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 2 to 5 stops. Its 0.6 to 1.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally possible. The degree of density is easily controlled by rotating the front filter ring, helping you to predetermine the additional exposure length required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. For easier, repeatable control over density settings, the front ring is visually demarcated with numbers representing the different stop values and features side knurlings to further enable fast and precise positioning.

This filter is constructed from Schott B270 glass for enhanced clarity and color fidelity. Each glass surface is multi-coated to help eliminate internal ghosting and reflections. The Freewell 82mm Standard Day Variable Neutral Density 0.6 to 1.5 Filter is also coated for resistance to oil, dust, and scratches, offering greater protection to the filter and helping it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The coatings are also hydrophobic, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

Freewell 82mm Bright Day Variable Neutral Density 1.8 to 2.7 Filter (6 to 9-Stop)

The Freewell 82mm Bright Day Variable Neutral Density 1.8 to 2.7 Filter is designed to mount onto lenses with 82mm front filter threads and provides an exposure reduction of 6 to 9 stops. Its 1.8 to 2.7 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally possible. These are better than any similar variable ND I've used. They are better built, spin smoother, and look better too.

Top-notch filters! Bought two packs to have matching sets.

Buy them separately

The filters are very well built and worth the investment. That being said, if I were to buy them again, I would recommend purchasing them separately. When you get it as a set, they only give one cover so you're paying the same price as buying them separately but getting less. Go figure.

This is a great comparison for the other brand that is too expensive. Sometimes name/brand will think twice. But for me buying 1 VND compare to freewell 2 VND already, its a great winning choice. love this filter.

Build quality is excellent, filter markings are very helpful and appear accurate, ring turns firmly and I like this, warranty is fantastic, reason for the one star, image quality is terrible. Tested on a Nikon D 850, with a Nikon 24-70 G ED F2.8. At 24mm, using stops between 6 and 9 the images showed marked non-uniform (much darker in one corner than the others) vignetting, along with a very bluish cast in that same area. For me, these are not acceptable and they will be returned. I currently use B & W XS Pro solid ND filters and was hoping for a bit more convenience, but not at this degree of image sacrifice. Sorry, I really did want to like these.

Works great!

can you attach another filter like a blackpro mist or moment cinebloom?
Asked by: adrian
Sadly, no. You cannot attach anything onto these because they dont have a thread on the outside. This is because of the magnetic lens cap, which I absolutely adore.

What about vignetting with a sony gm 16-35mm lens ?
Asked by: Joaquín
The 16-35mm GM already has a slight vignette at 16mm if you shoot RAW with profile corrections in-camera turned off. If you enable it, the vignette would be removed. Alternatively Lightroom/Capture One automatically removes it with the profile corrections it has. The filter itself is very well made and will not cause a vignette.

May i know what is the full diameter of the filter for 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, and 82mm?
Asked by: Direk
Sorry I can't measure precisely but the system is no larger than standard filters. The diameter is about 2mm larger than the thread size and flush with the lens barrel. The magnetic system is built in to the rim of the filters so it does not take additional space.

Is this VND "clear" or "off" before turning to position 2 or higher?
Asked by: Bradford
No. There is no way to turn it "off". The minimum filter factor / density would be 0.6 / 2-stops and 1.8 / 6-stops.
