Mackie EM-89D Overview

The Mackie EM-89D is an EleMent Series dynamic microphone offering tour-worthy construction and sonic performance tuned for clear reproduction of vocals and instruments in live stage applications and studio recording. Like all EleMent Series mics, the EM-89D presents an attractive combination of ruggedness, quality sound, and affordability.

The EM-89D utilizes a cardioid polar pattern, which rejects sound behind the mic to reduce the pickup of stage bleed and allow higher gain before feedback. The mic's dynamic moving-coil design requires no batteries or phantom power, and the balanced 3-pin XLR output ensures proper connectivity with stage boxes, mixers, and portable PA systems. The EM-89D includes a mic clip, an XLR cable, and a zipper pouch.

Mackie EM-89D Reviews

Very capable mic for the price, but I don't know who the target audience is.

Phenomenal sound. The low's are very rich and smooth, with a tapered-off but still very detailed top end. Definitely a muddy sound, but in an elegant purposeful way. The build quality is nice and solid, but I would like to see a metal XLR port. It came with an XLR cable though, I like to see that at this price. Now for the bad stuff If you plan on using this mic for stage work I don't recommend. The handling noise is a noticeable issue, definitely audible whenever you hold it. The off-axis rejection is not very impressive for a cardiod dynamic. It's very sensitive and has a very hot output (for a dynamic) so it picks up a lot of subtle noises most dynamic's can't. The frequency response does not seem to greatly benefit from the high sensitivity, because of the tapered top end, and muddy, smooth low end. It seems like this would be a great broadcast microphone, but I have an issue with the grille. It blocks plosives pretty well, but it makes a whispy, airy sound while doing it. I can hear the air dissipating throughout the mesh grille, but I don't hear much of the thud sound that plosives against a capsule make. Because of that, I'm using this mic mainly for spoken word with an aftermarket foam windscreen on top of the grille. The frequency response doesn't seem to audibly change much when I take the grille on and off. I think its priced appropriately at $50 USD (at the time of review). It can't replace the $100 alternatives like SM57/58, SE V7, or MTP 440DM but it's really doing it's own thing right now. Amazing broadcast sound for the price, but honestly it might've sold better if this capsule was put inside a broadcast body. I think the versatility of the hand held design is kind of lost with this mic. You don't want this sound on stage, it doesn't cut through mixes, but it sounds awesome on its own. Way better than the competitors. The handling noise and off-axis rejection also just isn't good, but it's perfectly fine for a broadcast mic. There's no point of a stage design on a mic that's best used in other settings, and the looks of a normal mic like this shrinks the audience of this mic greatly. A $50 XLR broadcast mic that sounds this good is exactly what people need right now.

Like it very much!
