This 72mm Ice 72mm Graduated Neutral Density Filter Kit contains three filters that can each be used to improve the results of your photography. Included are a soft-edge graduated neutral density filter, a hard-edge graduated neutral density filter, and a reverse-graduated neutral density filter. A filter pouch is included to store and transport this filter kit.
The included filters consist of 72mm filters that reduce the amount of light entering a lens by up to 3 stops. The soft-edge graduated neutral density filter and the hard-edge graduated neutral density filter each help to darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. Those filters are densest at the edge and taper to clear by the middle, with either a soft-edged or hard-edged line of transition between the dense and clear areas. A neutral density filter with a soft-edged line of transition is useful for images that do not have a strongly defined transition between the sky and the foreground, while a neutral density filter with a hard-edged line of transition is useful for images that feature horizons or any hard transition between the sky and land.
The reverse-graduated neutral density filter can be applied to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while also allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image. This filter achieves its effect with a 0.9 band of density above its center region that provides up to a 3-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. This band extends in both vertical directions and tapers to approximately a 0.3 density for a 1-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 0.9 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a hard-edged line of transition before the clear area. The placement of a 0.9 band of density with a clear area directly below allows the reverse-graduated neutral density filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above, the horizon.
