If you want to experience more features, buy DS920+ or DS1520+. One thing I didn't count on was that this unit doesn't have the Btrfs option. Also, 1GB RAM is not enough if you are thinking of running PLEX and other apps. So, be aware of that. Other than that, this is a great NAS.

Easy to set up

I was a little intimidated as this was my first NAS. But it was super easy to set up. Took about 10 minutes to install the drives and get it up and running. Did take a little bit of googling to figure out how to configure it the way that I want it to such as mounting the drives. But overall, a fairly painless experience.

Excellent Product

I've been using a collection of Synology NAS since the 413j came out. Just replaced one of the units 2tb and 3tb drives with 4tb drives to max it out and reused the 3tb's in the 420j until I can afford some 16tbs to replace everything. If the 420j works as well as the 413j, 214se, and 414j then it will be another winning choice. I will say that repairing the storage volume in the 420j appears to be much faster than the 413j and 414j. Unit came by UPS in good time, well packaged and in excellent condition. As expected from Synology, the unit was very easy to setup and get running.

Can you use this as a media server and a backup solution at the same time? Or do you need separate units?
Asked by: Russell
This unit is advertised as being able to do both but while the processor can handle media serving, the memory cannot be upgraded. So if there are multiple users, the responsiveness will appear slow. A better performing media server model would be the Synology DS220+ (BH #SYDS220P) or an even more powerful alternative is the Synology DS920+(B&H # SYDS920P).

Will this work as an attached USB drive? or does it need to connect to a network?
Asked by: Jose
For full function it needs to be attached to a network. It is a fairly basic model but it performs well for me. Transfer speeds for file access or backup far exceed my prior older Thecus model using exactly the same hard drives.

The Synology DiskStation DS420j 4-Bay NAS Enclosure BH #SYDS420J ships with 1GB of RAM. Depending on what you are running on the NAS, the RAM usage will change so there is no way to know unless you try it but if you are not running too much, there should be enough for the NAS to operate properly.

Is it powerful enough for 2 editors to get media off of it?
Asked by: Brian
That will depend on how you have it set up and just what you mean by media. If you expect to be able to edit two concurrent streams of high-resolution video probably not but if the demands are more modest it shouldn't have a problem.
