Roland A-88 MKII Overview

The A-88MKII MIDI Keyboard Controller from Roland is the latest in a long line of professional MIDI controllers for today's performers, musicians, and producers. It features 88 hammer-action keys combined with modern features like USB-C connectivity, RGB-lit controls, and MIDI 2.0 functionality.

The A-88MKII is equipped with eight assignable pads with illumination, eight assignable knobs with illumination, a pitch-bend/modulation lever, two assignable buttons, and two damper pedal inputs. Other features include: 5-pin MIDI in and out connectors and a USB Type-C computer port. Additionally, power is supplied from the computer via the USB computer port or optional AC adapter. Both USB Type-C to USB Type-C, and USB Type-C to USB Type-A cables are included.

A Controller that Plays Like an Instrument
With the A-88MKII, its robust, wood construction creates a solid playing experience that you can feel under your fingers. You can easily adjust the sensitivity and responsiveness to match your playing style.
Deep Expression
The A-88MKII has three user-definable zones so you can layer and split the keyboard with different sounds or instruments. The pitch/mod lever and an array of RGB-lit knobs and pads provide expressive hands-on control of your sound. A sustain pedal input plus two fully assignable pedal inputs mean your feet can get in on the action too.
Creative Control
Today's musical styles demand special production techniques and some soft synths and modules don't always offer the onboard tools you might like. The A-88MKII extends your creative arsenal with three configurable zones, advanced arpeggiator, chord memory, and multipurpose pads that can trigger commands and events, and energize real-time performance.
MIDI 2.0 and USB-C
The A-88MKII offers the latest technologies for universal compatibility and convenience. Class compliant USB Type-C provides bus power and single cable connectivity with macOS, Windows, and compatibility with iOS too. This controller is ready to take advantage of the extended capabilities of MIDI 2.0.

When connecting the A-88MKII to iOS devices with Lightning and Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit, A-88MKII AC power is required. The AC adapter is sold separately.

Custom Control and Instant Recall
Customize the A-88MKII with the control app for macOS and Windows. See all your layers and control mappings at a glance, and assign commands to the pads with custom colors for visual feedback. You can create custom setups to control specific soft synths or external hardware, and instantly recall everything with the handy Snap Shot function.
When Less is More
The A-88MKII is designed to be as thin and shallow as possible while still retaining dynamic playability. Surfaces are flat and the edges are squared so they sit neat and flush against other gear or can be integrated into a studio desk.

An unexpected surprise: you can place small USB cables and such underneath it and they will not get crushed. This is due to a great design of having the feet lift up the keyboard by a few millimeters. This is the first time my mouse and keyboard cable have not been subjected to dangerous squishing by the weight of a keyboard! I forgot to consider this point, but other features were of course more critical in my selection. A nice surprise!

Very Poor Support

Purchased my A-88 mk II back in November of 2020. The controller doesn't come with a power supply, so I had to purchase this separately. Last week (4.5 months of ownership) the device stopped powering on. I've tried two new power cords (both PSB-120, which Roland recommends) and neither will power the device on. Roland support has informed me that I need to drive the controller to a repair shop, 2 hours away, and pay to have it repaired. Not a wise use of $1000. I'd recommend spending your money elsewhere.
