Disaster

Appears very well-made out of the box. Once mounted to table and mic attached, the first problem noted was that the upper arm flipped up to full extension and it required much effort to pull the mic back down. It would not stay put - springing back up to 4 feet above the table and no way to adjust the tension. At the same time, the lower arm pivot point just above the table clamp would not move at all. I read in other reviews how stiff it was and suggestions that it becomes easier with use. So I exerted some effort to get it moving and it broke, and a spring in the middle joint broke through the end of it's arm. Now I've got broken junk.

Did a lot of research on quality boom arms with a LONG (48) reach. Decided on the Samson MBA48. B&H had the BEST price anywhere so ordered. The arm has exceeded my expectations in every way. Super happy with the purchase and the service I received from B&H. An easy 5 stars!

Perfect for my situation

What I had before was a cheap boom arm, only about 24. It was pretty terrible. It didn't have the strength to hold up my Samson mic and it was nearly impossible to get it out of the way when I don't need it. This boom arm is perfect...or as near as I could expect. The 48 are enough that I can position the mic ABOVE my arm-mounted 27 monitors and it will even hold my mic out of my line of sight. It IS a little stiff, but that's okay if it means it can stay in position, even if it gets bumped. It looks pretty sharp as well, unlike the cheap boom arm I had.

Long reach and solid build

I bought this particular arm because I needed a lot of reach, which it has, but it also turned out to be sturdier than I expected. Some reviews complain that the joints are stiff, but to me that's a feature. If you need to do frequent adjustments this might be an issue, but if you want to set once and forget, you should be happy with it.

Long Reach, Sturdy, Beautiful Boom Arm

I'm so pleased with this great-looking and feeling boom arm. My desk is a big farm table so I needed this kind of length to be able to attach the boom to the back. Most booms are much shorter. The materials feel luxurious. This is an excellent deal. You want a boom arm to be sturdy so your mic position doesn't slip. It swivels just fine and stays put. If behavior changes, I'll update the review. Rarely does equipment work this well right out of the box.

Mine came with no instructions. How do you adjust the spring tension? The springs are so stronge out of the package that it does not keep its position - it flies up to full extension.
Asked by: Steve
Yes - using 23oz microphone. If i hang a 5-lb dumbell on the mic the upper arm will come down, but the pivot at the table clamp will not hold position. Terrible engineering.

You can use a thread adapter like the CAMVATE 5/8" Female to 1/4"-20 Male Mic Stand Adapter (B&H # CAC0988) to convert the post to attach an item that requires a 1/4"-20 thread.
