If you've been looking for a powerful and versatile Thunderbolt 3 docking station that restores many of the ports and connectivity that have been removed on modern day laptops, take a look at the 32TB 2big Dock 2-Bay RAID Array Thunderbolt 3 from LaCie. The 2big Thunderbolt 3 Dock delivers a storage capacity of 32TB, which is comprised of two 16TB Seagate IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" enterprise-class hard drives. While the 2big is compatible with Windows 10 and macOS 10.12, it comes formatted as HFS+ for Mac, and is configured as hardware-controlled RAID 0, which provides performance gains, but no data redundancy. Also supported is RAID 1 and JBOD.

has anyone used RAID 1 and edited directly from the drive? I understand speed is greatly reduced using RAID 1 but does it affect working from the drive?
Asked by: ernesto
It is still possible to edit directly off the drive while in RAID 1. It depends on how heavy the files and the editing are that you are doing.

Download and install LaCie RAID Manager before connecting the LaCie storage device to your computer. The process automatically installs an important driver that allows LaCie RAID Manager to detect the device and manage RAID arrays.

Could I swap out the drives for SSD's? (I don't care if it voids the warranty, I'm just curious if its compatible)
Asked by: J Cole
SSDs require a completely different disk management controller than hard drives. SSD controllers make sure that writes occur across the address field of the entire memory space fairly evenly so that individual memory cells are not over used and subsequently fail. Each memory cell in an SSD memory has a finite lifetime. I would think that the memory management hardware and software of the hard disk would not be compatible with an SSD.

I never used RAID before. If I set this up for RAID 1, will I see the mirrored drive in Mac Finder? If there is a hard drive failure, how do I know which of the two drives inside the bay is to be replaced?
Asked by: Michael
The 2big Dock is a hardware RAID and uses the LaCie RAID Manager ( LRM ) software to view and manage the controller in the unit. This means that the Mac OS Disk Utility will only see the one volume and not each drive individually, so you will not see the mirrored drive in Finder or Disk Utility. If there is a drive failure in RAID 1 the volume will stay mounted to your Mac and remain accessible ( the controller in the 2big will automatically switch to the still functioning drive in the set ) The Front BLUE LED on the 2big will turn RED to alert you to a problem with the unit. There are 2 ways to locate which of the drives needs to be replaced. First the LED on the right side of the drawer will change to RED indicating the drive that needs replacing. Secondly in the LRM under the Array tab will show the position of the failed drive inside the 2big unit. The links below will take you to the user manual for the 2big Dock and the LRM. https://www.lacie.com/manuals/2big-dock-tbolt3/system-leds/ https://www.lacie.com/manuals/2big-dock-tbolt3/hard-drive-maintenance/ https://www.lacie.com/manuals/lrm/2-bay/array-configuration-and-maintenance/
